O-T Refinery workers - Nomex or Cotton?
Posted by Me Bite on 8/26/14 at 8:35 pm00
I need to order my FRC's and I'm torn which route to go. Any input is greatly appreciated. TIA

Cotton wouldn't be cooler?

Anything FR sucks.
Carhartt FR pants and wrangler shirts were my least miserable combo. Your results may vary depending on how fat you are.

Regardless you're going to sweat. Get the thinnest jumpsuit available and wear it in top of shorts and a T Shirt. Maybe some Dri-Fit tees.

You have a choice?
Where I'm at, only E&I techs and welders are required to wear FR treated cotton. Everyone else gets a choice. Cotton is great in the winter, soaks up sweat in the summer. Nonexistent isn't much better in the summer, and does next to nothing for retaining heat in the winter.

I can't stand coveralls; I've yet to find some that either don't ride up my crotch all day or hang low.
If your company allows it, I'd recommend any crewneck longsleeve paired with thin work pants (not jeans). The FR crewnecks are a lot lighter & less stiff than the button-ups; the work pants are much thinner/lighter than the jeans.
Cotton/nomex is up to you.

Coveralls are great if they have belt loops. Otherwise they are horrible.

I'm a contractor that does a little bit of work in different facilities that require FR clothing. I have thin nomex and I usually wear it with shorts and a dri fit tee underneath.

If I worked in a plant, this would be my choice...I've seen what even a small flash can do and I wouldn't be caught without nomex in that situation...

Yes, and I can choose between coveralls or a button up shirt and pants. You just can't mix and match Nomex shirt with cotton pants or vice versa because the colors differ a little bit.

Dri fit or anything spandex is horrible to wear under FR. If you get flashed it will melt to your skin and the doctor gets to peel it and your skin off.
Wear cotton shirts and drawers underneath. Powder your drawers and bring extra shirts.

Get the pimp arse plaid shirts that Brock gets their Supervision. Not sure how it wears, but I dig them.

Cotton all the way, It's a little stiff at first, but the more you wash it, the softer it gets.
