Didn't know where to post this, but hopefully I could get some help.
Please move if needed

I recently remodeled an older home and got an offer.

One of the problems that came up was the Federal box. I was wondering if anyone knew if these were still insurable?

Let's say they want it changed and I don't want to spend the extra $1100, could I not just change out the outlets to GFCI?

Thanks!

A FPE load center is near the top of the list of red flags on a home inspector's list. It is right below knob & tube wiring.

If I were you, I'd bite the bullet and change out the panel. Regardless of the inherent safety or non-safety of FPE products or knob & tube wiring or non-grounded wiring systems, the perception out there is that it is bad and fewer and fewer insurance companies are willing to insure homes with those problems.

If you don't want to do it yourself, you should make an allowance for the potential buyer to do it.

Dude you have to change the panel if it isn't 200 amps. I can do that in less than half a day depending on whether you need the entire service changed or just the panel

Why is it going to cost that much to replace the load center and breakers? I'm pretty sure I got all that for a couple hundred bucks, and I went w/ Cutler Hammer

That was just the inspectors calculations. I was hoping it would cost less than that.

The parts should not cost anywhere near $1100.

The labor to hire an electrician is what is going to cost the most.

I just looked this up they have a retrofit kit that fits these. Sounds like I'd go this way, if possible. Thanks
