Need suggestions for outdoor fire pit...

Building it on top of an already poured slab.
Have a 48" x 48" (inner measurement) to play with. max 60" x 60" (outside measurements)
Want a brick exterior high enough to keep kids from falling in it. Would prefer a metal liner, but if not, do I need to line the inside with fire bricks?
What kind of brick is preferred?
Thanks!

I used a bottom of a 55 gal drum. Put landscaping bricks under it and around the drum. Works fine.

Old Tractor tire ring and brick around it.

This is my setup. I've posted it before
I used 4 foot iron sugar kettle and ran a gas line to it. I lined the sugar kettle with some sand to keep the heat from directly impacting it. I topped it off with fireglass.

The only suggestion I would say is to not make it TOO big. If its too big then it is hard for people to congregate around and it takes a much, much bigger fire, which goes through wood too fast.

us an old propane bottle cut in half. surround with fire bricks.

Guess I should have mentioned I'm looking to do a square pit.

If you are building on an existing slab, I think you would need something that stands up off the slab to prevent some major cracking...I would have something made (or purchase) something in the shape that you want with legs and then stack some landscaping bricks up around it to make it look better...

Bottom is lined with fire brick. Remainder is Old St Louis. Folks can sit on ledge or can sit facing and prop boots up. Left opening in rear for cleaning and air flow.
