If/When it happens think Memphis could survive?

I would expect Memphis to be the first city to start looting.

I can't imagine what leads you to expect this.

Memphis will not survive.
I pray that the people at St. Judes survive.

We had a thread devoted to earthquakes this week.

New Madrid questions are answered inside.

Could a large New Madrid earthquake possibly change the course of the MS river?

I like Memphis a lot (don't care) but one of the major reasons I would never want to live there is for fear of the long overdue New Madrid quake.

If Memphis were to be decimated, maybe a bunch of yuppie volunteer kids and urban-exploring hipsters would move in and it would see a rebirth a la New Orleans.

I read an article that said that Memphis is one of the nation's largest rail hubs, and the loss of one of their bridges would definitely suck for freight movement. The eastern river bank could be lost to liquefaction if it is bad enough. Downtown and the riverfront would be the worst area hit.

I wonder if the levees up near the Missouri boot heal would hold up if it happened in the spring time when the river was high.
