What type of defense can be mounted against civil rights charges?

I'm not familiar with it enough.
Thinking the it's one man vs the entire weight and resources of the federal government.
Are there foundations that support defense? An indigent defender?
What means to supplement a patrolman's salary will Wilson be able to draw upon to face the issue?

A reasonable grand jury would do wonders for his chances at the state level. Not so sure the feds can win if the evidence doesn't support their assertions.

The Fraternal Order of Police will probably pay for his defense.

Have you ever heard of the Union? I know its an ancient relic to most people, but they are still around for some professions.
He will have an excellent defense - as he should. You can count on it.

The best defense is a good offense. Wilson should sue Brown, the Networks, Holder, Sharpton, and anybody that poisoned the factual well for political or personal gain. He could pass the hat and get a ton of financial support. Depends on what kind of man he is; heard that he was a "quiet" guy.

Don't forget to add that asshat Jay Nixon to the top of the list.
The fricking governor is not supposed to be calling for the "vigorous prosection" of officers who have yet to be indicted.

There's also a big distinction between failing at one's job and a criminal act. It is possible it was a shooting not in accord with what he was supposed to do as an officer - but not a criminal act.
There's also the distinction between burden of proof in civil and criminal trials. For him to be found guilty of a criminal act it must be beyond a reasonable doubt. In a civil trial, however, the standard of proof is lower (both sides are equal, whereas in a criminal trial the deck is intentionally stacked against the state).

This won't help him at a criminal trial and may bias a jury against him. The time limit to sue may run up if he waits - however - so he's got that to consider.
What he needs to do is get the best lawyer the Fraternal Order can find, and do everything his lawyer tells him to do 100% without question - and that's it.

Nope. Save that for AFTER the trial.
