After watching the Youtube video with the relatively slow electric indy car, this is clearly not about the profit or the actual racing. I believe the league was created for the sole purpose pushing the development of performance electric cars.

It's more for development of electric car tech than specifically high performance electric cars. The same goes for pretty much all top-level auto racing. More efficient electric motors, batteries, etc.
