In case you think the police are here to protect you:

In a single column, a veteran police officer has catapulted himself into the national debate over the death of unarmed teen Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri.

"I'm a cop. If you don't want to get hurt, don't challenge me," the Washington Post headline blares. The piece was written by Sunil Dutta, a 17-year veteran of the Los Angeles Police Department.

"Even though it might sound harsh and impolitic, here is the bottom line: if you don't want to get shot, tased, pepper-sprayed, struck with a baton or thrown to the ground, just do what I tell you," he wrote.

"I'm a cop. If you don't want to get hurt, don't challenge me,"

Fascinating perspective on the part of the officer.

I have long held that the police don't really give a shite about the citizens they are suppose to be protecting.

This guy's thoughts more then echo that.

"I'm a cop. If you want to get hurt, challenge me,"

Is this what you really think he said.

Isn't this just common sense? Yeah there are probably a minority of cops that act irrationally to disobedience but why risk your life? Go through the proper channels as he mentioned.

I hate police with a passion...

This sounds like sound advice to me.

In fact, the times I was pulled over and harassed endlessly by those frickers, I did not once bait them. I knew better.

Once I was illegally searched while he called me a drughead (nothing was found) and sexually harassed my hot girlfriend on the side of the road for almost 20 minutes.

I didn't retaliate.

Humiliated? Yes

Still in one piece? Yes

I think all officers say that, and most citizens say that too.

Thing is, i grew up learning how to respect my elders, and teachers, and parents and others that warranted respect.
when i didn't i was punished in some way.

Some people grew up differently, and think since they disrespected their teachers and parents and others regularly without punishment, that they can disrespect police officers. They are a drain on society.

Nothing positive comes from defying police officers. Just do what they say and get it over with. There's plenty of dipshit cops out there that want to feel powerful and take it out on you. Just ignore them, say very little and do what they say and go home and feel sorry for them and go on with your happy life.

i agree with the officer.

When I was a kid, an older kid held me up and threatened to throw me in the ditch. I dared him to, so down in the ditch I went. When I told my dad he said, "Son, if you run your mouth to a bigger guy, you have to accept the consequences."

Having learned that lesson, I've never picked a fight with a cop.

Yep, when they came in my cabin under false pretense (illegally) I didn't push back. Did get my dog out of the cabin though.

Seems much worse than

I agree with a lot of what the "cop haters" say, I am of the opinion many police officers are over-zealous. That being said, what do you think society would look like without them? Also, who in their right mind would want to be a cop nowadays..... they get crucified by the media constantly.

I would expect the quality of the officers to deteriorate in the near future.

Can only speak for myself, im 50 have been arrested twice spending time in jail in both instances yrs ago, also pulled over for various reasons a number of times. And in my case, i always gave the police a reason. Everytime. And if id been arrested for everything i should have been, id be in jail long after death. So ,even through im not a big fan of them, ive desevred what ive gotten from the police and more, much more.

Comply with them, video tape it if you can. Make sure they know you are taping it. May irritate them, but at least you will have evidence if anything improper does happen. Don't bait them in any other way.

Cops really have changed.

They are part of the problem not the solution

That is already happening.

That being said, the few run-ins I have ever had with police (speeding) I have always been smart enough not to tick the guy off who literally holds my life in his hands.

But I find it a sad state of affairs that in the United States, in 2014, we fear our police as much as we do.

Now some say that there are just a few aggressive bad apples who make the rest look bad. But the general attitude of our police forces is, we do what we want, you don't like it, enjoy jail.

How often have police reviews of behavior/shootings after the fact ever resulted in the cops not protecting their own?

If officers were required to wear cameras at all times, than I'd say "OK" to this advice.

However, it sucks that bad cops have buried LEO's general reputation in so deep a hole that I don't trust the lot of them. Sorry, but I don't have a lot of faith in going through the proper channels to file a grievance.

In undergrad at UGA, I had more than one acquaintance be robbed, yes robbed, by the Athens-Clarke police when they were arrested for things like open container or underage possession. When they got their possessions back after getting bailed out, all the cash they had in their wallet was gone. Yep, they sure had fun trying to "go through the proper channels" to get their money back.

It's crap like that undermines faith in our LEO community. It's really sad actually.

well, the " i will be nice to you until you pull a gun on me attitude" will leave the officer dead if he waits for the perp to pull a gun....
