Fruit trees hanging over public areas, free to take?

What is the legality of taking fruit from a tree that is growing well into a public area?
There is a greenbelt near my home with a home backing to it. The tree trunk is in the owners back yard, but 50-60% of the tree extends over their fence into the public green space. The apples are starting to ripen, and I've been very tempted to take a few of the 1000s of apples this tree has on it.
Aside from the angry owner threatening me, what are the consequences, if any, of taking the fruit?

i know in ga, even if the tree is planted in your yard, if the limbs go into your neighbors, they are free to cut the limbs or take the fruit that is on them

There is some specific law on this in LA which leads me to believe it is probably covered in CO too. You might give that a Google check.

The access to the front of their house would be a 2 mile walk. Their backyard backs to a green belt and the front of the house isn't easily accessible.
He's never out back when I'm walking there.

i have 2 fruit trees that go over my neighbors yard, i could care less if they took 100 of them, if not 1000. Less for me to clean up.

I know in New Orleans it's legal to take. There are even map databases of trees that hang over sidewalks.

Same thing here. The neighbor is free to pick whatever he can grab from his yard.
(to clarify, I could NOT care less)

It's all good until the tree starts throwing them at you...
