When I taught I could tell from the get-go which students simply copied and pasted off of Wikipedia because at least those were grammatically correct.

In grad school I handed in a well written (in my mind) and thoroughly researched paper. The prof kicked it back with a "D" because I used the male pronoun in all instances in which the subject could be male or female. When questioned on it, I pointed out that the ruling grammar guide (at that time) directed use of the male pronoun in instances in which the sex wasn't specified.
He still insisted that I change the paper to be more "fair". I literally went through and made every other pronoun "her" so that they alternated. Never mind that it made the paper practically unreadable. He corrected my grade to an "A".
