Last night as I watched the protests, I was impressed by the line of community leaders moving between the crowd and the cops. I heartened to see the group stop one guy cold as he tried to charge the line to get to the cops, and they talked the guy down.

What really caught my attention was the guy with the ponytail RAILING at the girl on the sidewalk who was running her mouth. He (and his bullhorn) shouted her down with something along the lines of "I am not going to let you ruin this by running your mouth".

It showed me there are people in the community that "get it", that give a damn, that understand that trying to fix their issues through violence not only isn't going to work but that they need to take a proactive stance against those who haven't yet come to that epiphany.

It's not perfect, it's not ideal, but it's progress. And I'll take it.

By most accounts this has been the case all along. The media just is not covering it.

"If it bleeds, it leads" is another part of the problem. It feeds the knuckleheads and only exacerbates the problem, thus the media that is supposed to report the news ends up shaping the news for its greater benefit.

And let's talk about the personal courage required to take up these positions - these "buffers" (only way I can describe them) are directly in harm's way - from both sides - they often turn their backs to the crowd to face the police and symbolically hold people back. Otherwise, they're facing the crowd with the police to their backs - they will be one of the last groups to figure out that the group behind them is surging and may get trampled, shot, whatever happens.

And they're not wearing body armor (or, at least not the ones I saw) - and most do not appear to have gas masks.

A lesson here, perhaps, at least an example (alternative to the looters) or, I like your initial thought "a glimmer of hope."

The community does seem to be playing a more active role in these riots which is a plus.

As for storming the Gov office yesterday, they should've unloaded on them. This isn't f'ing Iraq. Try doing that garbage on the WH and see what happens.

Big ol +1 for that.
