quote:

FERGUSON, Mo. — Police said early Tuesday they came under “heavy gunfire” and made 31 arrests during another night of violence in this battle-scarred St. Louis suburb, where the shooting death of an unarmed black teenager at the hands of a white police officer has prompted a federal investigation.

At a news conference in the early morning hours, Capt. Ron Johnson of the Missouri State Highway Patrol said that “our officers came under heavy gunfire” late Monday in a part of Ferguson but that police refrained from firing back. He said two people in the crowd were shot, but not by police, and were rushed to a hospital. Numerous fires were also set, he said.

Johnson said the two shooting victims were both men, but he had no information on their condition or identities. He stressed that “not a single bullet was fired by officers.”

Johnson also had harsh words for the news media, saying journalists have been failing to clear areas that police need to access. He also asked reporters not to “glamorize the acts of criminals.”

There is absolutely zero chance that officers came under "heavy fire" and didn't return one bullet in return.. This whole thing has become one giant shite show.. Night after night

I truly hope that the peaceful can win the day.

I'd say that there is a really good chance that under the scrutiny that the police are under that they did not return fire.

That said, heavy fire is a very subjective term. Does that mean three shots or three hundred?

The longer this continues, the better the police outcome in the long run. If the national guard is needed, how you blame the Ferguson police for needing to be militarized?

If any of the 31 arrested is on federal assistance, they should not be eligible for the welfare money again in their life. Period.

A single shot is "heavy fire" when the mofo is shooting at you!

I'm not laying too much of this at the people of Ferguson at the moment.

So many people are flocking there to take part in this bullshite that it's having the same effect on racism hucksters and looters that the Iraq War had on jihadis and terrorists.

I wouldn't be surprised if there are already a few domestic jihadists and/or terrorists in the crowd partaking in the festivities.

I was watching the Vice feed live when the cops came under heavy fire. It was heavy. Sounded like automatic fire.

If military is ever needed, the guard can always be called in.

By way of absurd tactics and policy changes that have spanned decades, the police have built negative goodwill in these low income, high crime urban areas. This is the result - zero trust and much disdain.

There is at least one asshat running around sneaking the "ISIS In US" sign into the background of news video, much like them tweeting their flag being shown in front of the White House.

There is a precedent for police not returning under such circumstances. In Oxford, MS in 1962, 55 U.S. Marshalls and 40 soldiers and national guardsmen were wounded or injured protecting James Meredith, and they never returned fire, because of JFK's desire to keep things from escalating, and his order not return fire unless Meredith's life was directly threatened.

At this point, I think the police should close off the town to all outsiders except journalists. The same thing happened in Oxford in 1962, when folks came from all over the South to participate in the riots and chaos. The should get a list of all the residents of Ferguson, and anyone who isn't on the list should be thrown out of town.

This ordeal is definately challenging the political rhetoric against militarization of the police IMO. They are starting to look almost as foolish as the people who insist that the initial shooting was racially charged.
