interest wanes in app development
quote:

Almost a third of smartphone users do not download any apps for their devices in a typical month, according to a report by Deloitte that predicts the volume of app store sales is hitting a ceiling.
quote:

The number of smartphone users who do not download any apps has reached 31 per cent, a steep increase from less than fifth in a similar survey last year. For those that have, the mean number of apps downloaded has fallen to just 1.82, from 2.32 last year.
quote:

Almost nine in 10 people also say that they never spend money on apps or other smartphone content, which will raise questions that the size and profitability of the mobile market for games makers and other producers of mobile media.

All I need for my phone to do is communicate, browse the web, and take the occasional picture. All these apps are impressive and cool, but I'd never use them if I downloaded them. So I don't.

I have a few paid apps that have been well worth it.

Dark Skies as an example to see exactly when the rain will start.

I paid for my GPS app several years back, although I doubt that's even a consideration today with how good the built in navigation apps are now. I've also bought some games I like, and a network file browser app (no good free ones on iPhone). I think if I had a tablet I'd probably buy more games.

Many of them are set up to prey on the addicts. It's basically 10% of the hardcore subsidizing everyone else. Part of the problem is there is no shareware style trial period for apps. The work around is releasing a lite app, but the lite apps are often functional enough that you don't need the full one.

And you wonder why app development and innovation is slowing?

IMO, apps need to get better. They need to be more robust and begin to approach the functionality of desktop programs, particularly games.

Take Rollercoaster Tycoon for example, that game had a huge following several years and lots of people were looking forward to it being an awesome mobile game.

What does Atari do? They release a watered down version of the game that lacked depth, priced it at $.99 and people hated it. If you scan through the comments in people were saying that Atari should have recreated the full version of the game and sold it for $10. They would have done much better.

Contrast that with Minecraft, a very deep, robust game that sells for $7. It's a top grossing app in the Apple store and Play Store. Why? Because it's awesome and people will pay for awesome.

People don't want to pay $0.99 for mediocrity. They want awesome and most people will pay a lite more to get it.

I do, but mostly from indie developers.

I would say the gold rush is over and the market for mobile apps is maturing.

i get this for sure.

i remember tomtom and garmin thought they would just release a few expensive apps to replace their hardware GPS devices and quickly realized they were a very small fish swimming in a very big pond.

the market shifted..WAZE (and others) realized the values in mining the crowd-sourced data which is why their app is free...they sell all the traffic data back to the local municipalities and state governments for $$$. the wealth of information contained in that data more than pays for the free app distribution.

I have paid for about a dozen apps so far.
From $.99 to $15 and most have been worth it.
Some are just for customizing my phone or getting rid of annoying ads but some are for productivity and are well worth it over their free counterparts.

100% agree here. I'm more than willing to pay for quality apps on any of my mobile devices. Quality mobile games are well worth the $7-$10 asking price.

I like to keep journals, and I also use it to keep all my financial information and pdfs of every important piece of paper in my life. All my tax information is on there, and I also use it to store all my handwritten notes for my CPA. It will actually search through my handwriting if I need it to.

I was never big into apps bu there has always been a quality control issue with them. There is just so much shovelware in the app store.

My secret is I never look at app stores when I want an app that does X for me. I always google best app for X and read the top lists and reviews then decide from there. App Store curation, especially on iOS, is and always has been a steaming pile.

ETA: I've found that iMore has the best/most articles along the lines of "7 apps for X" or "The 4 best X apps"
