I remember hearing about it a while ago on some show I was catching on the tube. Always thought it was interesting to think about what would've happened if WW2 had taken a course in which Germany came to us.

If I recall correctly the bomber was designed specifically to bomb our cities. Makes me appreciative to realize we haven't had a war that devastated / threatened our infrastructure since the Civil War.

Should've known better but a quick google showed me the correct spelling.

It came too late in the war, was massive plane and was never used? I think it had 6 huge engines

If I remember correctly, a prototype made a test flight to within sight of the US coastline, but by then it was too late to go into production.

I doubt it would have been decisive anyway. As our own experience over Germany proved, unescorted bombers got slaughtered. And no fighter, then or now, could cross the Atlantic unrefueled.

The guy in the linked article makes a valid point about why even a suicidal small scale bombing raid might prove effective.

quote:

What would have been the aim of a small Luftwaffe raid on New York? It might have skewed American strategic priorities like the Doolittle raid did for the Japanese, and it would have certainly forced a diversion of resources to defend the continental U.S.
