US dominates per usual... LINK

1. Harvard
2. Stanford
3. MIT
4. Cal-Berkeley
5. Cambridge
6. Princeton
7. CalTech
8. Columbia
9. U. Chicago
10. Oxford
12. UCLA
15. UW
22. Michigan
24. Wisconsin
28. Illinois
34. U. Colorado at Boulder
39. U. Texas
51. Southern Cal

54. Vanderbilt (first SEC school on the list and only two (#78 Florida) in the Top 100).

Pac-12 has 9 in the Top 100.

If one thing the US gave the world - it is our university system.

uva is in the 101-150 group ... not sure about that since the 2 arizona schools are ranked in the top 100, as well as utah ...

Rankings are wonky. Virginia is in the 100-150 range, but Arizona State is #88?

Doesn't make sense to me, but China's ranking obviously makes little difference.

I'm curious about the criteria if ASU is that high.

Is Chico State on there too?

Is there a bias towards west coast schools due to them being closer to China and possible having a lot of chinese citizens enrolled at thos schools?

I think a horny Chinese statistician got a hold of the study somewhere.

Props to my alma mater. No #51...

For those asking about the Arizona schools, my thinking is that their graduate school programs are probably much more prestigious than their undergrad programs. I know that's the case with UC Santa Barbara.

If one looks at the methodology, the shanghai rankings are essentially a ranking of a university's research output in the hard sciences. This is how china intends to benchmark their own unis against the rest of the world, since they cannot hope to compete in the social sciences and humanities without academic freedom or the ability to publish sophisticated prose in English language journals.

UVA is certainly no slouch in the sciences, but its strengths are in social science and humanities departments. This is why UVA does not fare as well in the shanghai rankings.
