No matter what people say, Ferguson is an example of big government: 1033

Rand Paul today blamed the militarization of the police on "big government". Statists and believers in soviet philosophy, even on this board, called such an accusation ridiculous. But it's not, for the militarization of local police is a result of the 1033 program.

quote:

America has been quietly arming its police for battle since the early 1990s.

Faced with a bloated military and what it perceived as a worsening drug crisis, the 101st Congress in 1990 enacted the National Defense Authorization Act. Section 1208 of the NDAA allowed the Secretary of Defense to “transfer to Federal and State agencies personal property of the Department of Defense, including small arms and ammunition, that the Secretary determines is— (A) suitable for use by such agencies in counter-drug activities; and (B) excess to the needs of the Department of Defense.” It was called the 1208 Program. In 1996, Congress replaced Section 1208 with Section 1033.

quote:

The idea was that if the U.S. wanted its police to act like drug warriors, it should equip them like warriors, which it has—to the tune of around $4.3 billion in equipment, according to a report by the American Civil Liberties Union. The St. Louis County Police Department’s annual budget is around $160 million. By providing law enforcement agencies with surplus military equipment free of charge, the NDAA encourages police to employ military weapons and military tactics.

How big government made our police force an army force

No racism here!We SWEAR! Its the SIZE of government that is at issue!

The Ferguson pig that did the deed was using several BIG GOVERNMENT items - like a firearm, and a squad car. Obviously government has gotten WAY TOO BIG when cops have cars and guns!

I agree with HHM. We need to get rids of guns and cars in police departments. These marks of big government were forced on the local PD by the Evil Obamadummy administration anyway.

Andy and Barney are a couple of BIG GOVERNMENT THUGS with their firearms and cop car! That's OVER-REACH.

In the incident that ignited the situation, yes, most likely racism was in play.

But it's the reaction that is illustrative of a big government overreach.

Yes. It doesn't actually support your premise. The article seems to suggest the problem is that the federal government is encouraging the militarization of the local PD. Doesn't say anything about the size of government being the problem.

I guess this will be the Trayvon Martin event for the mid term elections.

It seems like racial incidents get exceptional media coverage prior to major national elections, which in turns make these incidents bigger and more difficult to ignore. Every political or media personality that needs to exploit people's emotions to generate support will have ample opportunity to get in front of the camera and express their faux outrage.

I'm impressed that someone other than a democrat has figured that one out....but as I've posted before, the facts are not yet clear and the story will only get increasingly politicized from here on out. My advice is that we should all hold off on our personal judgement and try not to let anyone use this incident to take advantage of our outrage.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say you have a neck beard and own 1-2 fedoras. I also believe you to be under the age of 27 and a cat person. You like creamy peanut butter and can't stand to not eat all of one item on your plate before moving to the next item.

Sorry to disappoint.

37. I'm a "cat person" in the sense I have two cats and I prefer my indoor mice to be dead (preferably tortured first). I'm not a "cat person" in the sense I have a 110 lb. German Shepard/ Weimeraner mix.

Creamy peanut-butter sucks and it all gets mixed together in my stomach anyway. Listen I'm really sorry I'm not living up to your liberal stereotypes! Do you think you'll be OK, or does the prospect of not being able to just fabricate reality on the fly and have it correspond to real reality frighten you?

I didn't say they were liberal stereotypes nor did I say anything about you being liberal.

I know you aren't new here....you should know that poster's style by now.

He has to create a fictional extreme stance and hope that by associating it with the opposing argument, he can marginalize the dissent that he's not equipped or not willing to debate directly. This variant of the straw man argument is really all he has. You can see it in a almost every political thread in which he's contributed.

He does it in every thread he posts in, which is why I've given up on responding to him seriously. I tried that for a while, but he is no Rex, VOR, or any of the other progressive posters.

He is more akin to DA in his posting style. All emotion, no substance.

Wow, are you seriously this dense?

This equipment costs money and requires laws to authorize purchase and disbursement through programs (more $$$).

This equipment is then used to violate the citizenry's civil rights.

Big Government = too much tax money, too many laws, too much overreach. This would seem to be a classic case.

Now, I wonder how SpidermanTUba would feel if the citizens of Ferguson, whom I suspect he believes is being besieged by racist cops, didn't have any guns at all to protect themselves from whitey? He'd shite a brick. Yet he fails to connect the dots...

I wasn't gonna bitch about it, but I sure as hell wouldn't celebrate about it either.
