St. George proponents making final push to get incorporation issue on December ballot

Organizers of the city of St. George incorporation effort have scheduled what they say will be their final fundraiser to "help finish up getting the last signatures we need and then helping us transition from a signature drive to a campaign," says St. George spokesman Lionel Rainey III. The group has 17,700 signatures on its petition for a ballot referendum on the incorporation effort, Rainey says, adding he believes that will be enough to get the measure on a December ballot. Previously, the group estimated it needed to collect roughly 18,000 signatures, but that figure was based on the number of residents who live within the boundaries of the St. George Fire Protection District. Rainey says the group has since learned that the St. George fire department serves several areas that are actually outside the boundaries of what would be included in the proposed city of St. George. "The upshot is, there are more registered voters in their fire district than there are in what would be the city of St. George," Rainey explains. "So we don't need quite as many signatures as we thought we did." Rainey says he has been meeting with the Registrar of Voters and should know by the end of the week exactly how many signatures he needs to get the issue on a ballot. An attorney representing the city in the fight over the incorporation, Mary Olive Pierson, has said the city will immediately challenge any effort to put the St. George measure on a ballot. Rainey says his group will push forward regardless. "I don't know how to respond to a city-parish that says it is going to file suit against citizens who have done nothing wrong and followed the letter of the law," he says. —Stephanie Riegel

I guess it will come down to these two things:

1. Are there enough legit signatures to meet the threshold, and

2. Will a state judge issue an injunction to stop a December vote until all the lawsuits are heard.

If we vote in December, St George city will pass easily.

What happened to their often stated goal of wanting to get 20,000 signatures?

I guess they'll know with certainty tomorrow if the registrar can give them a number. They may have the minimum requirement already.

I know they are validating addresses, but some of those signatures will be thrown out because they died, moved away, etc. If I were them, I would not remove the sense of urgency by releasing the number of signatures until they've met the minimum + a reasonable cushion.

It's sad that Baton Rouge leaders will sue to try to stop St. George. It's these citizens right to incorporate if they choose to under the law. Way to be a good neighbor Baton Rouge.

They obviously have not reached their original goal, but as long as they have 25% of the voters signed on it doesn't matter.

I guess its kind of like football, everybody wants to go undefeated; however, you don't have to be undefeated to be the national champion.

SG opponents will tell you that a business has the right to join the City of BR and BR should accept any and all that qualify, but then they'll tell you that SG has no right to become a city because we're racists, BR people shop in SG, our taxes will go up, or some other technicality like BR actively annexing areas in SG.

People in SG do have the right to petition to form their own city, and if enough of the voters in SG request; they will eventually have their chance.

Exactly, there will be many duplicate signatures, people who live outside of the proposed boundaries, ect. This won't be because of anything nefarious, that's just the way these things work. You have to have a comfortable cushion because some percentage of the signatures on any petition of this type will fail upon authentication.

As long as they have 25% of the voters signed on it doesn't matter. And obviously the voters signing on have to sign correctly.

Certainly not all 17,000+ sigs are going to be good. It would be foolish to think they all are.

If the SG folks are smart, they will wait until the Spring to place on ballot!

This will give them time to let the EBRPSS self destruct and the Council to continue to make bad decisions on annexation!
