Interesting read. I'd like to hear the other side of the story, if there is one.
300 MPG Volkswagen

Though the XL1 can hit 300 mpg under ideal driving conditions, it’s combined mileage is usually a little over 200 mpg, and if you do city driving only that will drop to a minimum of 180 mpg under the worst driving conditions.

Not allowed in because it is "too efficient"? No.
More likely because the car hasn't been subjected to the various tests required to drive the car legally in this country, such as emissions requirements.
Look up the stories on people who have Land Rovers being seized by the government because they were a model year which wasn't on the government's approved list.

Thanks. Makes more sense now.
It will be interesting to see if it is successful in limited production and goes on to be offered in large quantities with a lower production cost.

If the Volt is any indication, it won't end well.
The Volt was originally supposed to cost around $20-30K and get better mileage than it did. It ended up costing around $50K, getting less mileage than expected off the battery, and having a serious problem with turning into a portable BBQ.

Several years back Ford had a little three cyl diesel car in Asia that got over 70mpg but you never saw it here.
I saw this car in Taiwan with my own eyes.

If only we could convince an obama bundler to build a plant with taxpayer money. We'd be home free.

Until I can get a new Land Rover Defender here in the US we should ban all of these cars... With the logic of this article that isn't true

Did it have all of the US mandated safety and environmental features?

Yeah, that thing would probably get totaled if you hit a speed bump too hard.

You won’t find the 300 MPG Volkswagen XL1 in an American showroom, in fact it has even been denied a tour of America because it is too efficient for the American public to be made widely aware of, and oil profits are too high in America with the status quo in place.
awesome article opening

Well, I didn't ask for the EPA and DOT reports but it looked a hell of a lot safer than say the new Fiats or that Smartcar death-trap.
And having dealt with EPA compliance from my time in the powersports business; if we could make a 2 stroke engine EPA compliant, that little diesel would have been a walk in the park.

i've yet to see a 2 stroke engine that doesn't cough and die on ethanol.

Lady two houses down from me drives one of those things. Every time she passes the house and waves I can only hope she doesn’t run into a ladybug and perish from the destruction incurred.

do we live in the same subdivision?
i have this uncontrollable urge every time this pulls into the house 2 down from me to sprint over to her house and tip the car over before she gets out.
