This is a nightmare. Gave our 4 year old shih tzu / Maltese mix to a family with 4 kids. We didn't have the time to give her the attention she deserved. Everything was going great, kids loved her, etc. Got a text this morning that she attacked the 6 year old to a tune of 14 stitches across her face. They were in Houston at the time, took her to hospital and said by law, had to call cops. Dog picked up, examined by vet, and has to be quarantined for 10 days. Not sure whats going to happen after that. She has never been aggressive like this. We have an 8 month old. Am I supposed to offer to take her back? Im afraid there's a chance she will do this to our child. I feel so guilty.

Tough call.

We eventually had to put down one of our dogs that became overly aggressive to everyone. Other pets, me, wife, etc.. Had her for 2 years and she started going schizoprenic.

If you gave the dog away, then it isn't your dog anymore.

Unless the dog had shown an aggressive nature and you hid this fact from them when you gave them the dog then there is really nothing you could have done. As for the dog, it needs to be put down.

So you gave a poorly trained dog to a household of small children and didn't see this coming?

It might be a nice gesture for you to get the dog back and put it down yourself. They have probably been through enough dealing with the bite.

I thought that this would be a really small breed. It seems kind of strange that it would do that much damage. 6 year old might have been rough with the dog. Little kids don't know how to handle animals a lot of time. Still it might be best to put the dog down. Sad.

the kids were obviously too much for the dog.

you raised a dog around no "kids" and the dog knew its place. in the new enviornment it was standing up for itself as the young children undoubtedly tormented it.

its a shame that it happened, but not too surprising. i guess the degree of the attack is a bit surprising though.

My shihtzu and 6 year old fight each other all the time

14 stitches?!? That's some aggressive biting for such a small mouth.

Has anyone given the thought that the kid was messing with the dog and the dog finally got tired of it?

She was not poorly trained but had never been around 4 kids all the time either.

Believe me, I would not have let her go to them if I ever thought this would have happened.
