I'm really glad this is getting a lot of national media attention now. It's something that's bothered me for a long time.

I have a Facebook friend who has one of his friends who is a cop. We both know the man and he is a good guy and family man, but he went ballistic a few month ago when my friend posted a story about the militiarization of the police force. He went on a very long diatribe about how they need these tanks, weapons, body armor, etc. to fight violent drug gangs. He went on to say that he wasn't in a position to tell us about specifics of all the dangerous Mexican gangs coming in La., but assured us that this equipment was saving our lives. He ended his rant by basically insulting both of us for not knowing what we were talking about and goading us to join the force if we dared.
I don't know how truthful he was about their situation, but I really doubt they need all of this equipment?

This.
And the fact that the typical reaction of police in the wake of an issue is that, "we were justified to do so" when the majority of the time that's not the case.
