Dana Milbank

quote:

The Republican Party has finally admitted what has been fairly obvious for much of the past six years: It produces fake news.

This is not an earth-shattering revelation to anybody who has been paying attention, but, still, it’s an important step for the party to embrace the phoniness.

As Shane Goldmacher reported, “The National Republican Congressional Committee, which came under fire earlier this year for a deceptive series of fake Democratic candidate websites that it later changed after public outcry, has launched a new set of deceptive websites, this time designed to look like local news sources.”

These two dozen sites, with names such as “North County Update” and “Central Valley Update” look like political fact-checking sites; the NRCC’s spokeswoman, Andrea Bozek, called it “a new and effective way to disseminate information.”

An NRCC official told me the sites are legal because, if you scroll all the way to the bottom, you’ll find, “Paid for by the National Republican Congressional Committee” in small print. “They’re not fake Web sites,” the official said. “These are real attack Web sites.”

Real attacks, but fake news: This is a fairly accurate summary of what the GOP’s scandalmongers have been purveying during the Obama years.

WND, newsmax, Ulsterman Report and .... really most sources used on this board come to mind.

quote:

There was the assertion that the White House was covering up high-level involvement in Operation “Fast and Furious,” a gun program under the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco Firearms and Explosives that went awry. No evidence was found.

There was the accusation that the Obama White House pushed through money for Solyndra to pay the president’s political cronies even though officials knew the solar-energy firm was going bankrupt. Didn’t happen that way.

Accusation: Obamacare would bring about the collapse of the American health-care system and replace it with socialized medicine and death panels. No such thing has occurred.

The IRS scandal, it was alleged, could be traced back to the White House, which targeted Obama’s enemies for political reasons. Nope.

The actual truth of the allegations doesn’t matter. Each one sullied President Obama’s name, and investigators’ failure to deliver the goods did little to remove the taint. That’s why fake news works: Falsehoods can drive a president’s approval rating into the cellar while the truth is still getting out of bed.

quote:

And now we have the Benghazi exoneration.

quote:

For nearly two years, Republicans have been alleging all manner of scandal involving the 2012 attacks on U.S. facilities in the Libyan city. That somebody — Hillary Clinton? — issued a stand-down order to prevent help from getting to American officials under fire; that Clinton rejected pleas for more diplomatic security in Libya; and that the Obama White House pushed false talking points to play down the terrorist attacks before the election.

The accusations have been roundly debunked, most recently in military officers’ testimony released by the GOP-controlled House Armed Services Committee.

Now there’s a bipartisan report, adopted unanimously by the GOP-controlled House Intelligence Committee on July 31, awaiting declassification by the administration. It throws yet another bucket of cold water on the conspiracy theories. In a statement, the top Democrat on the panel, Dutch Ruppersberger (Md.), said the report finds that:

“[T]here was no intelligence failure surrounding the Benghazi attacks.”

“[T]here was no ‘stand down order’ given to American personnel attempting to offer assistance that evening, and no American was left behind.”

“[T]he talking points reflected the conflicting intelligence assessments in the days immediately following the crisis.”

“[T]here was no illegal activity or illegal arms sales occurring at the U.S. facilities in Benghazi.”

“And there was absolutely no evidence, in documents or testimony, that the intelligence community’s assessments were politically motivated in any way.”

The report is not yet public, and Republican sources indicate that there is more disagreement in the report than Ruppersberger’s statement indicates and that the report is not as exculpatory as he implies. But there has been no challenge from the Republican side to the accuracy of the findings Ruppersberger detailed in his statement. Now that the truth is catching up to them, House Republicans will need to stay one step ahead.

Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.), chairman of the select committee on Benghazi, told CNN’s Deirdre Walsh last week that, despite what the Intelligence Committee found, “there is more work to be done and more to be investigated.” Excellent. Maybe he can post his phony accusations on some fake news Web sites.

We need another select panel to really get to the bottom of Benghazi. Right? I'm looking forward to more "bombshells".

We'll be lucky if we don't end up looking like Ukraine.

So you've got your panties in a bunch because the GOP is creating websites that appear to be news sites in order to get their talking points out?

Pardon me if I don't get too excited, since the Dems have legitimate news organizations to carry their water for them. No need for the donkey party to create fake news sites when it has the likes of NBC, CBS, the New York Times, Washington Post, et al, to do it on their own.

Because the administration claimed executive privilege

So the Administration lies, destroys documents, abuses Executive Privilege, refuses to allow eyewitnesses and whistle blowers to testify, and we're supposed to conclude that whatever comes from them is legit?

Right.

Milbank picks out the most tenuous parts of the conservative arguments and shoots them down. It's not exactly a strawman, because some conservatives do believe/care about this stuff; but it ignores the heart of the matter.

quote:

There was the assertion that the White House was covering up high-level involvement in Operation “Fast and Furious,” a gun program under the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco Firearms and Explosives that went awry. No evidence was found.

That ignores the base level incompetence letting guns slip into the hands of criminals.

quote:

There was the accusation that the Obama White House pushed through money for Solyndra to pay the president’s political cronies even though officials knew the solar-energy firm was going bankrupt. Didn’t happen that way.

But the core of the issue is that the President's "Green Jobs" initiative only produced green for the crony capitalists.

quote:

Accusation: Obamacare would bring about the collapse of the American health-care system and replace it with socialized medicine and death panels. No such thing has occurred.

Yeah, because Obamacare has been a stunning success. Anything to the contrary is just the vast right-wing conspiracy spewing propaganda

quote:

The IRS scandal, it was alleged, could be traced back to the White House, which targeted Obama’s enemies for political reasons. Nope.

That the IRS was being used as a political tool is a SERIOUS abuse of power. Yes it would be much worse if it was directly ordered by the president (and I don't think it was) but his complete lack of a response is telling.

I guess the VA scandal is no big deal either because Obama didn't directly order his people to fake records.

quote:

The actual truth of the allegations doesn’t matter. Each one sullied President Obama’s name, and investigators’ failure to deliver the goods did little to remove the taint. That’s why fake news works: Falsehoods can drive a president’s approval rating into the cellar while the truth is still getting out of bed.

I guess the actual core of the issue doesn't matter to Milbank. The issue isn't that Obama is corrupt, it is that he is mind-mindbogglingly incompetent.

No kidding.

Remember, first the President said he had no knowledge of Fast and Furious, but later claimed executive privilege, which, by its very nature, is an admission that he had privileged discussions with Holder about Fast and Furious.

Yep. Most transparent administration ever.

Let me get this straight... the douche in the picture above is accusing Republicans of trying to gin up stories out of nothing?

It's been an effective strategy for Democrats. Why would not others use it too?

Did the DOJ intentionally supply weapons to known drug cartels ?-Yes

Did they make an attempt to track them?-No

Were they used to murder innocent civilians-Yes, at least 150 Mexican nationals were killed or maimed by these weapons

I don't care about Mexican civilians, did anyone of consequence get killed with these weapons?-Yes, U.S. Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry was murdered with one of these weapons

Did anyone question the legality or logic of providing criminals with these guns-Yes, Congress attempted to find out exactly what had happened in this case and attempted to investigate the program. Eric Holder refused to provide subpoenaed documents in the investigation and was held in contempt of Congress. President Obama invoked executive privilege to block access to these documents.

Those are the facts, spin it how you want.

Actually the DOJ didn't "supply weapons to known drug cartels". Instead, when gun shop owners flagged suspected straw purchasers, the DOJ told them to allow the sale (with the stupid intent to track them).

So in other words, the DOJ waived the gun control law which I take it you are opposed to? If we had no gun control laws, then there would be nothing stopping these cartels from buying all the guns they want.

Isn't the argument against gun control that criminals will get the guns no matter what gun control you have? Wouldn't these cartels have guns to kill agents like Brian Terry even had they not purchased them in that instance? Isn't that the argument of the NRA?

War on women. Impeachment. Those are just two deceptive topics that Democrats have used for political purposes. The key word being political. All people seeking political benefit want to keep the topics in the news that they believe they can use for advantage. When real issues are not available, deception is all you have, and sometimes deception is more effective than reality in politics.

The intent of the operation was to put the weapons in the hands of the cartel. Allowing the sales to take place when they knew where they were going is the same a supplying them No effort was made to track them. I find that curious.

I am not opposed to all gun control laws. Why would you think that? I am opposed to selling guns to criminals and no control of our borders if that helps you.
