friend of mine will be there in both towns in February.
Is buying them on the website the best way to get tickets, or can you get better (or cheaper) ones thru other channels

any things he should know, things to avoid...?

He should know that its ungodly expensive for tickets for both teams, despite there always being tickets available. Either explore the secondary market to buy from club members, or buy direct from the club and pick them up at the box office or a sponsored vendor.

I purchased tickets for Barcelona vs. Oasasuna and was able to pick them up four hours before the game at some kind of Spanish/Catalan version of Barnes and Noble.

I walked up to the ticket counter at the Berabeu and got two tickets for around 100EU (I think). It was late in the season and it was a huge game.

We were in nose bleeds, but it will go down as one of the best sporting events I have ever attened.

Real Madrid beat Espanyol 4-3 in the dying moments after being down 3-0 at one point. (roberto carlos, beckham, raul, etc...)
