Apparently squashing ISIS is morally okay.

I'm down with it. I was down with it before the Vatican. However I understand the Vatican's measured approach. They don't want to inflame other Christian areas around the world surrounded by muslims that might turn into more killing fields.

Neocrusades?

Sitting in church the other day, I was actually pondering at what point would fellow Christians mobilize (not including govt intervention) to a place like Iraq to defend those from religious persecution? We've seen muslims do this in a few notable cases but not in droves. I can't recall any stories of Christian doing this recently. Countries where they would be needed: CAR, Sudan, Nigeria, Iraq.

This quote really just seems odd and out of place--maybe just a bit of an anachronism.

What have they done?

Historically condemned military intervention.

Unless the Church is condemning a government-sponsored genocide, I don't see how it's helpful for Church leaders to weigh in on decisions of the use of force--at all.

Not really. The Church does believe in such a thing as "just war", and Pope John Paul II gave the green light to go after Al Qaeda after 9/11.

Indeed. Contrary to what many think, Catholic Church doctrine is fairly complex not as simple-minded as many might be led to believe.

The CC acknowledges that, in desperate times, unsheathing the sword to defend innocent life is a viable and sometimes necessary course of action.

Be that as it may. Do you think it odd that the Vatican would be in favor of saving innocent civilian christian lives?
