Is there a way to have the gamepad display the browser while the TV displays the game? I don't think this is possible, but maybe I'm missing something.

No not that I'm aware of. I know you can hit the home button to get to the browser while your playing. But that will show up on the game pad and tv

Not unless you're some type of genius hacker, no. There are some games where the Wii does have a sort of in game Facebookish status function that will let you tell the world whatever the hell you are doing or what you have accomplished.
The Gamepad is a very game specific device that apparently Nintendo intended to be used game to game based on what could be innovative and what not. Such as multiplayer.
