Honest question (please don't flame): Why can't Fall football practice start earlier? Why does the NCAA limit it to its current timeframe?

Because you wouldn't want to push them that long. They're already banged up by seasons end so you wouldn't want to add another 3 weeks of camp.

And if you didn't extend camp but only started it sooner you'd end up having diminishing value because you'd stop camp way before the season starts.

Hope this helped.

That's a great question. Why have any practice breaks at all? Go from the bowl game to winter practice into spring practice right into summer practice and then to pre-season practice and into the season. What possible justification can there be for limiting practices?
The NCAA hates LSU.

I applaud the efforts of these guys you see going out and practicing on their own...like Fournette. And you see guys like Quinn going to training facilities, and guys like Harris go out West to learn from a QB guru.

I just wondered why there is a limit on these things. I would think it would be helpful for guys who want to learn the playbook, to maybe have a class or light practice preseason before Fall....or at least be around our coaches learning techniques that the LSU staff wants them to learn. Practice can be a range of things...it doesn't necessarily have to be pad-on-pad slugfest.

The NCAA did just amend the rules to allow mandatory summer workouts:
quote:

Major college football coaches can now require their players to participate in up to eight hours per week of summer activities. The NCAA amended its bylaws in late December to allow such mandatory activity, which can include conditioning, weight training and up to two hours of film study per week. In the past, any organized team workouts in the summer were supposed to be entirely voluntary.

ETA: oh and they're supposed to be student-athletes not full time professional football players. At least in the NCAA's eyes. They almost practice as much as NFL players do now.

Cause they are student athletes.

Not pro players

It amazes me that so many don't realize that.

Students go to summer school. Students and youths participate in internships during the summer. They do this to get ahead on requirements, to fulfill electives and to find an academic edge, or an edge in a competitive career environment. For some of these guys who have professional athletic career aspirations, this could fall in line.

To be fair, these days that's almost just a difference in semantics.

But if it makes the OP feel any better, none of the schools in D-I pay attention to such formalities as practice limits anyway.

All teams are allowed the same number of practices before the first game. I think it is 29 but I'm sure someone out there has better knowledge of this than me.

Do you think they need more time to get ready or what?

Not a big Allen Iverson fan, but he had a point with his 'practice' rant.
