I have a good acoustic guitar that I'm thinking about changing the strings on. Right now I have phosphor bronzes on them, but I'm thinking of switching them out for some 80/20 bronze. I kind of like the uniqueness of the sound, but I've heard from various sources that it sometimes can go pretty wrong. Any opinion on this? Have any of y'all tried 80/20 bronze before? Thanks!

I use the Martin phosphor bronze wound strings. Loved the Elixir's but I guess they hardly wore out so hard to find anymore.

I have 80/20 Elixir on several acoustics (got them at Guitar Center at a ridiculous price...4 sets for $20) and have had good luck with them.

As for the OP, what kind of problems are you worried about?

80/20 is usually said to be "brighter" sounding than phosphor bronze. See how you like them brand new and after a few hours of playing.

Like most things with guitars, finding the right strings is a trial and error experience. 80/20s on an Ovation is extremely harsh (you get somewhat the same situation with a "wet" guitar...one that has a soundboard that's not completely dry).

PBs are great for finger-picking...gives a more mellow sound. Plus, they seem to hold up much better.

Last option, the PB nanoweb strings. A lot of guys are going with them. I haven't used them but they're suppose fall in between the 80/20s and PBs on brightness.

I've used Elixir Polywebs for years and really like them. I have used the D'Addario EXPs and Martin's Coated XPs and liked them too. I just seem to alawys grab the Elixirs....maybe its the purple box with gold highlighted polyweb text.
