I went to the Lafayette Best Buy for the first time in a while this week. They have renovated the whole place and the Magnolia Home Theater section is getting completely revamped. Everything was mostly in boxes but I did spot some McIntosh gear and confirmed with a Magnolia employee that they would be carrying it in store. I can't believe we could see some real Hi-Fi equipment in Best Buy.

I spotted a MC275

and a C50 preamp

Has anyone else seen this in their best buy? I can't wait to go play with some McIntosh gear even if it's their cheapest stuff.

Saw it at the one in Kenner as well, Best Buy is looking for a whole new demographic with that stuff.

Should also see an influx of highend appliances there as well.

BB Magnolia needs better speakers. I think B&W CM series is the best one they have.

I saw the Martin Logan boxes but didn't see anything on the floor. I would assume that if they are going to up their amp/preamp game then they would also roll out some better speaker.

They carry a lot of their products.. but Yeah I agree if they are going to carry such an expensive brand of Pre/pros and amps they need the same price point speakers...

Mid range Revels would do the trick.. I just can't imagine they'd start carrying 800 series B&W's

Only in Magnolia Design Centers, which is not a standard Magnolia.

A few years back they were only about 10 in Cali, Seattle, and Chicago. They opened in DC/Atlanta/Dallas/Houston 2 years ago and it looks like they are doing exactly what they did with their regular stores and saturating the markets everywhere else now.

Some stores do. The Woodlands store has them.

That's awesome but it probably won't happen in Lafayette.

If Lafayette is getting a Design Center then they will carry B&W all the way up to the 8 series, all of the Mcintosh gear, Peachtree, Akram, Sonus Faber, Martin Logan, etc...

It is basically a stand alone specialty store inside of a best buy. Their inventory and point of sale systems are completely different.

They are over saturating the market

So what is Best Buy's reason for this? Is the profit margin higher on these high end products? Is there less of a "Internet showroom" attitude when it comes to stuff like this? Meaning people are willing to buy in store instead of amazon.

Yeah, you're talking close to 50% profit margin on luxury audio equipment.

Yes, you can't buy a majority of this stuff on the internet. This is specialty shop type stuff. Some of the equipment can only be sold if a certified installer hooks it up.

Its sad that Bestbuy is saturating the market with this stuff.

I understand your disappointment with the saturation but it works well for me. Typically to see or hear any of this equipment I would have to drive to New Orleans and that is not always ideal. This way at least I'll have a local showroom available to me.

I search audiogon a lot just for the fun of it and the selection in Louisiana really seems to be lacking compared to other states. Again, having something local will be great. This may be the only way Best Buy can survive in the Internet driven marketplace.

And thats the point of something like that equipment. It is supposed to be a rare item and half of the joy in obtaining it is having to hunt it down.

Its not meant for every Bob and Tom, as they won't appreciate what they have. It would be like putting a Ferrari Dealership on every corner, it takes away from the allure of it.

I completely understand where you're coming from but is every Bob and Tom going into Best Buy looking for real Hi-Fi? Just look at all of the bluetooth speaker and soundbar threads that are started on this board and the OT. People who listen to compressed music on their iPhones will not understand what these products are and why they are so expensive. Just because the Ferrari dealership is around the corner doesn't mean everyone in the neighborhood can afford a Ferrari.

I'm just excited to have something local.

So has anyone confirmed if this is an actual Design Center or just another Magnolia store?

I didn't know there was a difference until this thread. Lafayette had a small Magnolia section before the reno. I don't know what it will be classified as after the renovation.

If there is McIntosh gear in the building, then it is a design center. A standard Bestbuy or Magnolia doesn't have the capability to even ring up a transaction with McIntosh gear on the ticket. As I said earlier, completely different point of sale systems.

I believe I had heard that Laffy, BR, and NO were all getting design centers
