iPhone documents and data taking up too much memory

I googled how to fix this issue, and i've turned off that setting to make sure it isn't syncing, but it still takes up 6.20GB on my phone, and can't even snap pics on my phone now. Does anyone have an idea how to fix this, or what the hell documents and data is? I also can't update my phone due to having no free space left
i have the iphone 4g

I'm guessing it's just an 8GB total phone? The problem is that's just not much room to work with. You're probably going to need to dump some apps/photos/files. This is kind of like saying I can't fit 2 cars in my 1 car garage, what do I do? You either need fewer cars or a bigger garage. Are you planning to upgrade anytime soon?

It's actually a 16gb. What else is considered the documents and data that i could erase?

step 1: install google plus
step 2: tell it to 'auto back up photos & video'
step 3: delete all photos and video from your phone once its done.
other than music, thats all i can think of that should take up any space on your phone.

Delete your old texts and voice mails. You'd be amazed how much that shite adds up.

i'll try the voicemails. I wish there was an easier way to delete all the text messages

Yeah, it takes a little time but it's worth it. Don't forget all the voicemails in the deleted folder as well.

Your numbers don't add up so I'm wondering where you're getting them. I only show about 4GB lost to the OS/overhead on my 32GB 4s. If you have 16 GB then either you have another 6 somewhere, or the 6.2GB figure you listed is wrong. What does it list as used and free under Settings->General-> Usage->Storage ? That should list all of your apps and how much storage each one is taking up.

delete your browser cache. its all those 1080p movies on his phone from brazzers.

Documents and Data refers to information being held inside of apps. It's texts, photos and anything third party apps save to your phone.
Go to Settings>General>Usage and it will give a breakdown of the total space each app is taking up. Click each app to see how much space the app is taking and how much space is being used by data inside of the app.
If you play a lot of games, those are usually your main offenders. Deleting and reinstalling these apps clears all of the saved information, but be careful that you don't do this with saved data you care about, like say, if you have a bunch of worlds saved in Minecraft (like me).

it says total storage is 5.0 gb, but says available is 5.0 also. Not sure if that means its a full capacity? i have icloud turned off, because that filled up a long time ago.
On the sync bar it says 201.5 mb (i record a lot of music on my guitar, but its still a separate thing from documents and data), video is 3.60 gb, photos 2.43gb, apps 2.92 gb, d&d 6.20gb, other is 1.33gb, and says i'm over capacity 3.41gb
I really dont have any games on my phone. Just the basic stuff, music (spotify), banking, facebook, twitter, a couple guitar apps, etc. Nothing major. I've seen a ton of people with way more apps than me

Hmmm....something's weird here. On a 16GB phone you should have something like 13GB total for used and available. Did you jailbreak your phone? (If you don't know what that is then the answer is no).
You should be looking at this screen:
You're interested in the available and used numbers.

Did you mean 5.0 Available and 5.0 Used rather than Total Storage and Available? What version of iOS are you running? On iOS 7 the screen I'm talking about looks like this
If you have 5.0 GB Available I'm wondering if you have some other problem. You should have enough space to still take pictures.

I didnt jailbreak my phone, wouldnt even know how.
I am running the iOS7.1, but can't update to the latest version.
I think i'm looking at it right, now. It says 193mg available and 13.1 gb used. Sorry, i'm not very tech savvy at all

Then just go through the list of apps and start deleting stuff, be it text messages (especially pics and videos you don't need) or entire apps. If that's not good enough then you probably should look into a solution like CAD suggested with Google+ or DropBox, basically get your pictures and video to the cloud and off your phone.

No worries...nobody here knows everything...I'll be the first to admit that!
That's actually good news...I think we were all starting to believe that your phone was totally hosed
Based on the numbers you gave earlier, I'll second what CAD said...you should move your photos/videos to the cloud and off of your phone. You can use the Google +, Dropbox, or my personal preference OneDrive (Microsoft). All of these will automatically back up your camera roll, so you'd just need to go into the app, move the photos/videos from your automatically uploaded camera roll to a permanent folder and delete them from your phone. If you download the desktop version of any of these, they will also sync your photos/videos to your computer.
As for the docs and data, that has to be stuff in your third party apps. Click on each app in your usage list and it will tell you exactly how much is being used for docs and data.

its possible simply getting enough memory free to update the OS could also clear out any 'bad' data that is using up space....maybe...

I 'll start deleting those things, and see what happens. thank yall for the help!

He needs to turn off the full size backup option in the Google+ app (which is turned in by default) or else his pictures are going to start counting against his 15GB Google free space limit.
