Lightning got a little to close for my comfort last night at my daughters soccer practice. A warning horn went off at around ten miles away. Our coach said the first horn is a warning but the second horn will sound when you must evacuate. The storm got awfully close before practice ended. There were soccer practices and softball games going on as we left the facility and skies were black. Do you know of any official standards on how close lightening can get before issuing a warning? In the USAF it seems like I remember it being 7 miles...

They say if you can hear the thunder, you are close enough to be struck.

It was really dark and we had our phones looking at the thunder storm. It got about 10 miles to us and was closing. It seems like I have heard 25 miles as a standard for SEC sporting events and PGA Tour events.

We always shut down games at first strike. If you see lightning, time to move indoors.

PGA Tour events.

Why do they worry about those? Not even God can hit a 1-iron.

That joke no longer works for the younger generation. They use hybrid irons now.

We were seeing it in the clouds but it was not striking the ground nor making thundering sounds.

I've been told 8 miles, but I guess it depends on what specifically you're shutting down for.

I think it was 7 miles at the baseball complex I worked at in Hs. We had some badass lightning distance detector.

Mariner's are taught the 30/30 Rule: If you see lightening and you cannot count to 30 before you hear thunder, then seek shelter and remain indoors for 30 minutes after the last sound of thunder.

And that punch line doesn't work without the rest of the joke either.

Yeah, you can be reasonably far and still get struck
