In the Senate primary, incumbent Lamar Alexander is being challenged by Tea Party favorite Joe Carr, wealthy radio station mogul & radiologist George Flinn, and 4 other opponents. No runoff system, simple plurality wins. Some disagreement over whether Flinn (2nd strongest of the 6 opponents) takes more votes away from Alexander or from Carr. African-American constitutional conservative Brenda Lenard could also siphon votes away from Carr in the open primary.

There are also potentially two tight Republican congressional battles involving incumbents in the 3rd CD, where Rep. Chuck Fleischmann is being challenged by Weston Wamp, and in the 4th CD, scandal-ridden Rep. Scott DesJarlais, recently diagnosed with neck cancer, may need some sympathy vote to beat back a strong challenge from Jim Tracy.

On the Democratic side, in the 9th CD, which is majority black, popular white Rep. Steve Cohen is facing opposition from two African-American candidates.

As usual, will provide updates throughout the evening, this time while watching the Patriots-Redskins game.

I hope Carr can at least make Lamar Alexander sweat a little. Early results show Alexander ahead 48-44.

No early results from the Memphis districts yet, but I suspect Cohen has it.

Edit: Alexander now up 51-38. I expect him to do very well in middle and East Tennessee, who are starting to report now. I don't think Flinn will significantly undermine Carr's support in west TN.

Yeah, a bit surprised at Flinn's early 4% - thought he'd be closer to 7-9%.

Incumbent DesJarlais in early trouble, down 55-37, incumbent Fleischmann very slight lead. Incumbent Sen. Alexander now with a 15 point lead.

DesJarlais has pulled ahead of challenger Tracy by 0.4%, after trailing earlier by as much as 18 points.

Alexander still leading by 14, declared winner.

Fleischmann barely hanging on now, only up by 1.0%

Cohen rolling to easy win in CD9 race.

9:39 PM - Race called for Sen. Lamar Alexander over Tea Party candidate Joe Carr.

10:02 - 9th CD Dem race called for incumbent Cohen.

The two remaining races described in the OP are now down to leads by the incumbents of less than 1%. Two nailbiters !

For those who think their votes don't count, the final tally in tonight's Tennessee 4th CD, with 100% of precincts reporting, shows incumbent Scott DesJarlais defeating challenger Jim Tracy by 33 votes out of 76,534 votes cast.

I'm guessing a recount is likely

The biggest story in Tennessee so far is Stacey Campfield's loss. No state senator has lost in 37 years and Campfield loses by almost 40 points.
