So, I'm walking along Monuments to Traitors Avenue (not its exact name) here in Richmond, and after the Robert E. Lee memorial and the JEB Stuart memorial I suddenly stumble across that of Jefferson Davis, on top of which are inscribed his motty noble thar words:

"Not in hostility to others, not to injure any section of the country, not even for our own pecuniary benefit, but from the high and solemn motive of defending and protecting the rights we inherited, and which it is our duty to transmit unshorn to our children."

Good for a chuckle, but nevertheless a beautiful walk in a very interesting and charming city:

The union victory represented the greatest triumph of free markets over collectivism in the history of the world.

Wow. Why on earth is there a statue of Arthur Ashe there? It seems so out of place.

Absolutely.

I have visited most of the major Virginia civil war battlefields now... when you stand next to the earthworks and think of the trench warfare and the bones and bullets that must lie beneath your feet... it's all quite terribly sad.

You sound like Patrick Henry, but that was an earlier war.

I know how you feel. Sometimes you see a Rex thread and you go to downvote only to realize you already did.

True and ironic. It was just unnecessary.

Freeing millions of slaves from the iron shackles of collectivism was not unnecessary.

Read up on Frederick Douglas being upset about a portion of his earnings to his master. He sounds like a tea party member.

It's really just a reflex by this point.

I think it was a case of local black leaders wanting to poke Lee, Stuart, Davis, and all the still-Confederates around here in the eye.

eta: Went to the Petersburg battlefield again this morning, and near the crater some citizen laid a wreath, with the two familiar Confederate flags attached and a ribbon that said "Shall we never forget". I found that interesting.
