Obviously this has no impact on the game and the two team's styles were different, but in terms of a programs, the two were at very similar places over the previous 10 seasons before playing LSU.
Both programs have had a good deal of success but were unable to win the big games and really get into elite company. The 1 point victory was enormous for Clemson and was a springboard into their best season since probably their championship year in the 80s.
First, Wisconsin probably has a little more brand name because of the 3 recent conference championships, but from 2004-2013 Wisconsin was 10-26 vs. teams in the final AP or Coaches rankings. They were 4-12 vs top 15 teams with their best win coming over No. 5 Ohio State in 2010. Interestingly, 2 of the 4 wins were in the Cap One Bowl over SEC teams Auburn and Arkansas (05 &06 seasons). They finished ranked in the top 10 twice, 2006 and 2011.
Clemson, from 2003-2012 regular season Clemson was 11-25 vs. ranked teams and 3-13 vs. top 15 teams. Their best win was over No. 10 FSU in 2003. 1 of the 3 wins was in the Peach Bowl vs Tennessee. They had no top 10 appearances in the prior decade.
By comparison, LSU from 2004-2013 was 26-21 vs. Ranked teams and 16-20 vs. top 15 teams.
