UPDATE SAME ISSUE: Late Night OT Mechanics Question (Chevy Colorado)
Posted on 8/6/14 at 1:05 am

I have a Colorado, recently I went to start it and right after it started it killed on me. After about 10-15 minutes it starts fine. There is no problem while it is running, just starts kills then doesnt do anything for a while after. Do I have a unicorn in my radiator? I heard they are a bitch to get out.
UPDATE: After two mechanics looked at the vehicle they couldn't find anything wrong. One of them changed my spark plugs and the other thought it might be the fuel filter. So after brand new spark plugs and a new fuel filter, my truck is still doing the same thing.
Is this a mechanical issue or is it something that is possibly wrong with the computer (someone told me the fuel to air mixture may not be right)...Thank you!

I don’t know how to fix a car. If my car breaks down, and the gas tank does not say “E”, I’m fricked. But if the gas tank says “E”, I get all cocky; “I got ths one, don’t worry about it. Lemme get out the toolbox, AKA. ‘wallet.'”

It just straight up dies with no other symptoms? No sputtering?

Sounds like a fuel pump going bad and heating up the relay.

This makes the most sense.

What year is it? Did the Check Engine Light or Service Soon Light come on (and then go off) at any time prior to this happening?

Rotate the air in the tires and report back.

Could you explain the logic behind the guess you made? I'm genuinely curious. Also, I'm pretty sure all of the relays are solid state so it's not like the coil in a relay is going to heat up. Also, if the fuel pump is going bad then the "contacts" in the relay should be rated higher than the fuse.
Edit... OP I think that the Colorado has the 5 cylinder version of the six cylinder the trailblazer has in it. If that is still the case, when is the last time you cleaned your throttle body? Those engines don't have an IAC (Idle air control) valve. They count on a machined gap in the "butterfly" on the throttle body to ensure it gets the proper amount of air when idling. Because of the way the crankcase vents that opening gets gunk in it sometimes.
Google a video on how to clean it. It should run much better after you do.
How many miles are on it?

Who are you, what is your background?
You sound knowledgeable about mechanics. I'm tired of me and greasemonkey being the only resident mechanics on the board.

I'm the broken shite whisperer. No joke. It's a family curse. Everything I own is broken or on the verge of breaking no matter how new it is.
I have been fixing things since I was 8. Built my first V8 at 14. I thought I was a late bloomer. My brother was building racing engines for folks at 14. I do all my own work and have built a few cars but I have been wrenching all my life. It's what I do for a hobby when I have time.
Currently work in controls and automation but have worked on everything from microwave ovens to large turbines.
I can't grow a garden to save my life though...

I also have a Chevy Colorado & have almost the same problem. Every now & then, when I go to start it, it won't start. Everything in truck works (radio, bells, AC, etc...). If I wait exactly 10 minutes, it starts up & runs fine. I've read cleaning the key, but that didn't work. Also read that it may be the anti-theft device in the truck, but haven't had a chance to look at that yet.

If the security light comes on or flashes at anytime after vehicle has been running for more than a couple of minutes, then it's possible the pass lock sensor (mounted inside and part of ignition cylinder housing) is not reading properly. If no security light is present then it's something else imo.

Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon are not known for having fuel pump issues like the Silverados, Sierras, Yukons and Tahoes of the mid to late 90's...and in some occasions, early 2000's yr models.

Colorado Symptoms:
Extended Crank time, Hard to start, hesitation, Lack of power, Surge or Chuggle, Rough idle, Light or intermittent misfire.
Cause:
due to various factors, the fuel injectors may become restricted. Extensive testing has demonstrated that the fuel related issues are the cause of clogged injectors.
Correction:
Have injectors cleaned using GM UPPER ENGINE AND FUEL INJECTOR CLEANER. GM F/I cleaner is the only injector cleaning agent approved of use in GM fuel system components. Other cleaners may cause damage to plastics, plated metals or bearings.
Go by a GM dealer and ask if they can print off this bulletin number for you:
#03-06-04-030H.
