SIAP

Thomas Sowell

quote:

Has any other country, in any other war, been expected to keep the enemy’s civilian casualties no higher than its own civilian casualties? The idea that Israel should do so did not originate among the masses but among the educated intelligentsia.

In an age when scientists are creating artificial intelligence, too many of our educational institutions seem to be creating artificial stupidity.

Sowell is stupid. There are long standing international agreements on the treatment of civilians during warfare.

Just like Ben Carson?

I think saying things like that makes you look ignorant.

You are right. And those "agreements" are violated in every war that ever happens because they are unenforceable and unrealistic. Unless you are having battles with standing armies on battlefields devoid of civilian populations, you are going to get civilian casualties. If you are hiding munitions and firing rockets on civilian populations from areas embedded in your own civilian populations against a stronger enemy, then you are going to get pushback and you are putting your own civilian populations at risk.

If a man with a gun grabs a hostage and starts firing into a crowd of children while using the hostage as a human shield and the police fire at the man and also kill the hostage, saving the lives of the crowd of children, do we accuse the police of murdering the hostage? No. We recognize the situation and realize that there were few good choices. Of course, that is a bad analogy because the children can be removed and the gunman and hostage can be isolated. But, still, the same concept holds.

If you fire rockets into Israel from Gaza, you are going to get bombed. It is pretty simple.

You sure do love hating on educated black men.

Btw, it has been reported more than once the IDF informs the civilians when and where they are bombing. Do the Palestinians do the same thing before they launch their rockets?

No, and it's a false belief that war should ever be fought in such a manner.

Warfare is a different animal than it has ever been because of the easy accessibility and speed of information, but it is still war.

Are you talking about the Hague Agreements? The ones to which not one Muslim nation surrounding Israel, and certainly not Hamas or the Gaza 'civilians', are a signatory?

Mine was a statement of reality. Sowell's quoted statement above is an arrogant strawman. I have followed this crisis closely and have yet to see a single journalist or pundit or analyst say that because Israel suffered x casualties they are only allowed to kill x-1 Palestinians. Instead, what they say is that Israel's response is disproportionate and dismissive of Palestinian lives. Sowell, too, is dismissive of Palestinian lives.

Once again, you only give the man a second glance BECAUSE he's black. There is nothing exceptional about Thomas Sowell in a writing talent sense.
