I went to take my dog out Saturday night, noticed a little pool of blood next to the freezer and nearly shite my pants.

I opened the freezer and a few packs near the top had thawed, most everything was still close to frozen. I loaded up my inside freezer and luckily found a neighbor awake and with enough room for the rest.

The "power" light comes on, flickers a bit, but the freezer won't get cold.

I nearly lost a bunch of fish and game, and would have if I had gone to bed instead of taking the dog out.

Sounds like an upright freezer.

Whatever it is, seems it had to get a little warm for the blood to leak onto the floor.
The light should be off if a gfi tripped.

yep bought a chest freezer at lowes clearanced. Put nearly a whole calf about 500 lbs and lost it all in 2 weeks. cannot tell you you what I told them at lowes but lost more value than a couple hundred dollar freezer.

Exactly and if it's a chest freezer for blood to be on the floor would mean it either overflowed or the drain was left open.

My upright freezer's defrost timer goes out about every two years. I bought a alarm from amazon for $10 it's not very loud but my freezer is next to my garage door so I walk by it often.

They have wireless Alarms too which are good when your freezer is in the garage

You just taught me something cause I did not know those existed. Nice insurance to have.

It's a regular chest freezer. The drain plug was about 90% closed, hence the slight amount of blood. Some frozen berries had also thawed, plenty of juice in there from those. Luckily, everything was still OK.

If I buy another, I'll definitely go with one with an alarm. I know the new Whirlpool ones have an alarm. Either that or I'll buy another used one and get an alarm like one of the replies above mentioned.

I'm just a little bitter now...the protection plans for these freezers typically cover about $200 worth of spoilage. I had $1500 worth of meat in there, minimum.
