Hey guys,

I'm working on a piece for next week giving my 2-cents regarding prospects waiting until late in the process to make their decisions. I'm hoping this thread will allow you to share your sentiments regarding the issue. As difficult as it may be, let's try to be as unbiased of possible.

Is it fair to ask/expect a kid that is enjoying a once in a lifetime moment to do it any other way than his own?

I know you guys are extremely passionate about the recruiting process and I wanted your take. I'm sure this has been discussed before, but I wasn't around during those times...

I'm not going to voice my opinion here, but I may play devil's advocate just to get all angles.

Their decision, their choice on how to do it. I have no problem with them waiting.

Now, some would argue that if Fournette would have ended his recruitment earlier in the year, he could have done a lot of damage for LSU at the Opening and the build up to the all star games, not to mention the camps he attended.

Our class might have been a lot better if Fournette, Dupre, Garrett and Quinn all committed earlier in the process.

What if they already know well in advance where they want to go?

i think it depends on the kid. some kids talk about just wanting to get the process over quick and easy so they dont have to deal with all the calls. then the other kid who loves the attention and wants to be on ESPN and have everyone talking about him. it doesnt bother me, just as long as they know what they want and stick with it.

I seriously doubt that most elite recruits that know 100% wait until the end to pick. It's the ones that are still weighing their options and are still listening.

Also, if Speedy Noil would have chose A&M sooner, maybe LSU has Williams on campus. I truly believe that Speedy played our coaching staff. Same goes with Willis.

If it takes the kids that long to know where they want to go, then so be it. I don't like when kids decommit cause that defeats the purpose of a commitment.

Now if they know and they are doing it for attention, I think it is pretty backward to wait. Once committed, you can start to work on other great players and help bring in a great recruiting class.

If a player is coming to win championships, then committing early and working other recruits seems like the most obvious answer. If they are waiting because they like being wine and dined then waiting seems a little egocentric. I'm okay with them waiting though rather than committing early and then switching commitments.

Most of those making their decisions at all-star games are very highly rated. Teams hold spots open for them and then are forced to change their focus if the kid chooses a different school. The lower rated or under the radar type of guys don't really have the luxuries that the higher rated kids do in choosing teams. They're also often at the mercy of where the higher rated kids choose to go because they might be plan B.

That being said, some schools might not wait forever on plan 1A when plan 1B is ready to commit today. So while a kid can choose to commit on their own timeline, sometimes even the highest rated ones can't wait forever.

But I think it's all just the nature of the beast, really.

Didn't some of his family members try to convince him to stay close to home in the end?

I'm all for the kid enjoying the process; however, he can't get upset if he loses his spot to other players that committed earlier in the process to the same school. There are positives and negatives of each and I think the main positive for most kids is securing that spot and being done with the whole process. I imagine it can be overwhelming getting all the mail, calls, etc....so being done with it early can cut it out more...it just also cuts out more of the free opportunities to get those free visits.

I don't care when they commit, I just don't like how some recruits get carried away with the spotlight and attention they get.

the only people that care are the fans because we are impatient and now after the 5 for 5 debacle, lots of insecurities

There needs to be an early signing period IMO

i think this would benefit the player for sure...i know a lot of them get burnt out on the process, especially if they are verbally committed somewhere and other schools keep blowing them up

I should give this board the lowdown on all those details surrounding 5for5. When I get home I'll put something up.

I have no problem with a 17-18 year old kid taking his time to make a very important decision that will have an impact on the rest of his life.
