Finally finished Season 5 of The Wire (spoilers through entire series)

Warning: SPOILERS through all episodes of series
I've tried a couple times before to start season 5 after dragging through season 4, but the first couple episodes didn't hook me. I pushed forward finally and the season really picked up once McNulty started his fake serial killer hunt, which is pure awesomeness.
But how they gonna do Omar like that? I've known for a long time he would die (spoiled in another non-Wire thread) but to have some meaningless kid kill him?

The show sort of went off-track for me during this time. It was still awesome, but a little weird at times. However, framing it within the realm of "Whatever it took to keep the wire going," it all made perfect sense.

I'll quote what I always say to this in Wire threads:

That's the point though...it can be anybody at any time, and sometimes you won't even remotely see it coming. And to top that off, no matter how "dominant" in the game you think you are, eventually there will be someone who isn't scared of you...notice right before Omar got got, all the kids ran off except for Kenard, who kills him a couple minutes later.

I was hoping someone would have taking Kenard out after he killed Omar.
It was the one time Omar didn't really watch his back because he never would expect a kid to take him out. Just shows that anyone could be gotten to at anytime.

The trivial nature of the whole deal is emphasized at the end of the episode when Omar's name tag is almost mixed up in the morgue. It drives home the point that Omar wasn't really all that important in the grand scheme of things.

Exactly. Important on the streets, but "just another thug" to the rest of society....just another irrelevant casualty.
When it happened at first, I was like "Man, that's fricked up that they'd off Omar like that." But then it starts to sink in as to why, and it not only makes complete sense, but brings a whole other level of realism to the show...because IRL, sometimes it doesn't matter who you are (or you think you are), random acts of violence happen to anybody.

Kanard was little piece of shite even before he killed Omar.

I finished the last couple episodes and like it, but don't love it as much as Breaking Bad. Season 5 was a lot better than Season 4, but I still think Season 1 was the best.
I did enjoy that despite everything that happened, at the end the city has largely not changed at all. The players come and go, but the game stays the same.

that's the point. we're are essentially running in circles re. drug policy and how we handle the inner city problems today.
carcetti's character is a huge representation of this...he comes into the picture with all this pie in the sky shite only to be humbled and dragged down by the system.

everyone hates 2 until you watch it again because it seems ignore the hood. After the rewatch you pick up on how much the Stringer/Avon relationship in season 3 is defined in season 2.

I thought Breaking Bad was pretty awesome, but I'd prolly have it ranked somewhere from like 10-15 for me, whereas I have The Wire as my #1 best show I've ever seen.

Interesting. I have S4 ranked #2 behind S1 (1, 4, 3, 2, 5 is how I'd rank them).

Yup. That's one of the main points of The Wire, along with the fact that everybody has both good and bad in them...nothing is black and white. Drug dealers and murderers can do some good while detectives and politicians do some bad. It's a constant back and forth and nothing is cut and dry.

really? Season 5 was the weakest for me, I didn't care for the media storyline, that was not that interesting to me. Still a good season though.

I didn't really care for the school storyline, and while the newspaper thing was kind of lame it payed off at the moment the reporter made up the serial killer calling him. McNulty's reaction to this was priceless.

Season 4 almost made me quit the show, I just didn't enjoy it much. Then when 5 started off slowly I didn't go back to finish for at least a year. The amount of time between when I watched the seasons could be influencing my rankings.

I thought the storylines of kids of that season were just captivating and awesome. One of my favorite things about the series as a whole.
I mean shite, Dukie, Randy, Michael, and Namond (frick him)...that was great TV IMO. Different strokes, I guess.

His reaction to them describing the serial killers psychological profile was hilarious.

Carver's final scene with Randy kicked me right in the feels.

I'm glad Bubbles was able to turn things around.
