Birth certificates and Driver license will work. What we used for our Disney Cruise.

Does it visit another country? At some point, if the boat breaks down will you have to be in another country? If yes to any of those, you should have a passport with you.

Yeah. See? What does that mean?

"Oh no you don't need one but maybe"

Is 600$ worth a "might need"

I know they make passport cards good for only canada and Mexico. They are only 50$ a piece. Might try that.

Get a passport.

You don't have to have a full on passport to get on many cruises but once that boat leaves the country, the ONLY way you can get back in without a passport is on that same boat. Basically, if the ship leaves from and enters a U.S. port and doesn't leave the Western hemisphere, you don't need a passport to get on the ship or enter the U.S. when it gets back, just some form of state issued ID. You'll probably need a passport to leave the ship at any ports-of-call, though, so having one is still a good idea. Some countries will allow the passport card for this, and others will not, so getting the full passport still is a good idea. If you get sick out of the country and need to be flown home, though, (or just need to fly home early/late for any reason) you'll be told "tough shite" if you don't have a passport since you cannot enter the U.S. by air without a full passport.

If you disembark and embark from the same port you do not need a passport.

Ya right! You think they are just going to never let a US Citizen back in? It might take a few hours but you can get back in.

No, but then again, I didn't say that. I said they're not letting you in without a passport, and if you think it only takes a few hours to get a new passport from a consulate in a foreign country with only your word that you're an American and a state photo ID, maybe you need to do fewer drugs.
