You knew this was coming: John Carter should have been Guardians of the Galaxy

It's apparent that the Guardians of the Galaxy will be a hit. And the entire project was a gamble what with all new characters, universe, and story. They built a fabulous product that would be engaging for the few readers, many new Marvel fans, and all other people who like sci-fi and a good action-adventure flick.

Think back to John Carter. John Carter had to deal with all the same issues, but it failed. Not a failure in content or character...we all know it was due to a poor ad campaign. Maybe if Disney had pushed this movie better, or if John Carter went to a different studio it would have been successful, like it seems moviegoers trust Marvel now for Guardians of the Galaxy to be as successful as it will be.

I am kind of jealous and ticked off that we won't be able to see another John Carter/Princess of Mars movie. I don't think there was a single problem with John Carter as a film, it was the issues outside of the film that made it bomb. And it completely sucks. This film (series) is as/would have been as rich a story as Guardians of the Galaxy.

I doubt anyone will comment on this. I just needed to say something.

Loved Guardians of the Galaxy, by the way.

John Carter failed when they changed the name and removed Princess of Mars. The studio had so little faith in the franchise they neutered the name.

Like some how, removing Sci-Fi Fantasy elements from the fracking title would somehow make the movie more appealing to the mass audience. I kept expecting them to finish the job and just call the movie.... CARTER! They probably thought about that until someone reminded the 23 years old studio exec that then people would think it was a presidential biography.

I do think the Carter story was a bit disjointed. You could tell the thing had been through about 600 re-writes.

I didn't hate the movie, but I also think the movie gets too much love on here for simply not being a dismal failure. It has some pretty large and in some cases almost nonsensical plot inconsistencies.

Could have been much better.

i haven't seen JC, but does it have personalities like the characters in GotG?

JC seemed much more serious (which means less fun)

I know all you're saying as it's been hashed out over and over again on the board.

What my beef is is John Carter could have been what Guardians of the Galaxy will be. And it's not fair. I'm venting.

@SFP: You should just check it out. It's fun in a different sense.

LINK

Exactly. The GOTG trailers have all been fun.

See the attached trailer for JC. Somber while at the same time not giving anyone any idea what is going on other than some guy on Mars fighting monsters.

John Carter seems to be much more like LOTR...a serious epic with lots of adventure

agree and agree

when I saw J. Carter I was like, "yes! this is the book I read when I was a kid" it does seem like the studio either didn't care or were ashamed of the fact it was an ERB classic. I'm surprised they left his character in as the narrator.

wouldn't have cast the Battleship guy in the lead myself, but at the end of the day he wasn't that bad and can't really be blamed for the script simply not being up to par in translating a classic story to the big screen. Lord Blackwood also seems to mail it in as the villain, Strong is capable of better work and Lynn Collins is certainly princess material, the Wonder Woman of Helium was the most remarkable part of the movie, her and the Thark CGI.

the author and series deserved more respect and better treatment, a shame someone like Peter Jackson didn't adopt that series, would have kept him busy another decade.

It does stink that we won't be getting any new John Carters (even though it technically was a success), but I think the film had a few roadblocks. It's more serious. Disney didn't know how to handle it (TigerMyth is spot on about the title), and the film, while we love it dearly, isn't complete in the end.

It does set up a nice world though.

I am too. With Wreck it Ralph and the Big Hero 6 team, Marvel killing it under Disney, Pixar, they've been great recently. John Carter just fit outside all of that, and they tried to go too much PotC on the film. It SUCKS, because John Carter has a lot of tones it can go through from fun romp to seriously-toned struggles of aliens and humans. I think we'll get another shot at it, eventually. Maybe not in 10 years, but it will happen. I mean, remakes...haha. We'll be seeing a GotG remake in 20 years probably.

The tones are completely different, and where the characters are the point in GotG, the adventure is the point in John Carter.

Yeah same here I really enjoyed John Carter. Much more so than most of the comic movies that have been released in recent years.

Right. The parallels I'm drawing here are a studio taking a gamble and tackling an entirely new universe and franchise. And of course, in one instance they knocked it out of the park in all aspects of movie-making.

Riggins ain't Chris Pratt and Lynn Collins ain't Zoe Saldana.

The big difference is that GOTG has Marvel's name attached to it. People will buy anything they're selling right now.

If John Carter was released 1 or 2 years later there may have an entirely different turnout.

Doubt it.

The movie was released 2 years ago not 20. Not like somehow in 2 years people would be willing to flock to Carter.

GOTG was successful for the the very simple reason that the trailer looked fun, whereas the Carter trailer didn't inspire anything.

The problem with any huge project like this is that the artists lose a lot of control over the finished product. Producers tend to be people who lack creativity yet still want to be big, important people in show biz. Add to that the immense pressure of success and they inject the only input they know how to offer, demographic market analyses and the elimination of anything that they think might offend or confuse the average idiot consumer.

They tend to outrank many of the artists in a project, and constantly bully them into making changes that render a film impotent and predictable - safe, in other words.

The worst part, as far as comic book movies go, is that the films have built-in audiences and will be successful regardless of quality, thereby giving producers the sense that their moronic decisions and mandates were brilliant and spot on. As a result, they have no reason to change anything they're doing, so the cycle repeats itself.
