Overstock working with Counterparty to issue stock on the Blockchain

On Tuesday afternoon, Overstock—one of the world’s largest online retailers, with $1.3 billion a year in sales—unveiled a webpage that explores how a public company could issue a “cryptosecurity” to potential investors. In an echo of the bitcoin digital currency, this would be a stock that’s controlled by cryptographic algorithms running across a network of computers owned by people and companies spread across the globe.
In other words, all stock trades would be governed by tools in the hands of the general public rather than by a traditional stock exchange, such as the NASDAQ or the New York Stock Exchange, and these trades would be mathematically verified and recorded in an online ledger that anyone can view at anytime—something that, Byrne believes, could eliminate some serious flaws in the world of high-stakes trading.
Overstock’s new webpage amounts to little more than a rough outline for how all this would work, but the company has invited others to help flesh things out. “How a public company would issue a cryptosecurity has yet to be established,” reads the webpage, a “wiki” that anyone can edit. “Because the methods of issuing and characteristics of a cryptosecurity may be novel, how such a security may be issued and traded, and the risks associated therewith, deserves careful thought.”

Just from reading this article it is clear Byrne has no idea what he's talking about when it comes to financial topics. Then again, his degree is in Philosophy so that isn't surprising.

Only 39 larger in e-commerce. Doesn't crack the top 250 in total.

I wouldn't buy shares with goldenbagers money.

Finding uses for the Bitcoin algorithm, and its kin, as general ledgers for security transactions actually has merit. The verification calculations will have to be done on a finite network to make sure ownership of the securities complies with the securities laws of the various countries. Whether the networks will be operated by the issuers or some third party underwriters of the securities will be something worth watching. I'm sure someone will lobby governments for the license to operate such networks that limit their competition.
One way or another though, any use of this type of technology for securities transaction recording purposes will require regulation and cooperation with governments. No government is going to allow unregulated securities to be issued or traded.

Oh, I totally agree with this. But if you read the article the guy (Byrne) who wrote this up imagines that this will somehow solve the "problems" posed by allowing short-selling and high-frequency trading. Which of course aren't really problems to begin with, nor will be affected by a change in settlement mechanism.

Who would do the halting of the exchange if things get out of hand? Ikea?
