It's freaking crazy. There's no way to predict anything based on prior tendencies either. It's pretty scary.

Atheist group sues the IRS saying that certain churches are abusing their tax exempt status. IRS settles and says they'll monitor sermons for said abuse.

This could cause issues. Will any church be able to even say that homosexuality, abortions, birth control, etc., are sins?

Those are all political issues. By stating what is or isn't a sin, could they lose their tax exempt status?

As far as enforcing the 2009 law that the IRS was sued for not enforcing, I imagine it'll have 99% to do with endorsing candidates and discussing issues specifically tied into politics.

If you speak about abortion, that's fine.

If you speak about a specific candidate's views on abortion and why those views are right or wrong, then it's probably not.

So is the end game to have every church assigned a govt monitor to assure no clergy are pushing their flock to believe certain political ideologies?

Sounds very Soviet.

This pleases Jay Carney

No way this amounts to anything. The most politically vocal churches are of a certain demographic.

Not that that's the point.

Amazed that a law like this was even passed in America.

There is no court cited, no suit named, no person questioned by an "article" with no named writer.

Excellent source ya got there.

Thanks.

quote:

The original lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Madison in 2012 alleged that the IRS was violating the U.S. Constitution by not enforcing the federal tax code, which prohibits tax-exempt religious organizations from electioneering. The FFRF argued that churches and other religious organizations have become increasingly more involved in political campaigns, "blatantly and deliberately flaunting the electioneering restrictions." The lawsuit asked the court to order the IRS to initiate enforcement of the electioneering restrictions against churches and religious organizations.

Ron Reagan Jr. Is on the board of the FFRF. One would think, the way black churches blatantly flaunt electioneering restrictions, that conservatives would favor this.

If Churches want tax exempt status, don't get involved in politics. It's as simple as that.

So you're saying that the black churches that conspired with the DOJ during the 2012 election cycle should be taxed? The racism is strong in your statement.

Your question assumes that black churches conspired with the DOJ...which is not a surprise since everything is a conspiracy with you guys.

And where is the racism in my statement?

Eta: and I already answered your question with my last sentence to the previous post.
