Except when it comes to beer, apparently.

Probably the Tony Perkins/Rick Santorum crowd of Republicans is ok with this.

Forget what you've heard about the low-tax South. Southerners actually pay some of the highest taxes in the nation when it comes to the important things in life, like beer.

Hefty excise taxes on beer in some states doesn't necessarily equate to high "sin taxes" on all indulgences. Other states with heavy levies on beer, including Alabama, Georgia and Missouri, had some of the lowest taxes on cigarettes.

yep, the evangelical wing of the party is strong in the South. They control who wins primary elections and therefor what candidates have a chance to make runoffs. They want sin taxes and morality legislation, so even if the majority of their constituents oppose it, politicians tow the line to get their due.

Reinforcing my belief that Canada is more like the South than the North (super high beer taxes in Canada)

Alabama is a state that while recently has been a big red state as far as presidential elections go, is just a fricked up political state. Both repubs and dems are equally guilty of fricking up tons of laws in this state. It really is a shining example of a bi-partisan shitshow

Come on now.....
If you make $100K in NYC, you'll pay about $12K in state/local income tax.
How much booze would I need to buy in order to equal that amount

enough to get through one LSU football game properly.

Also, MO is not the south.

I would suggest you support this state senator's position:

For distilled spirits Texas, Lousiana and Georgia have the lowest excise taxes. But bama? No. Bama has one of the highest state excise taxes in the nation. That's why guys from Bama pull up with a uhaul truck an buy $30,000 worth of booze from Dorignac's in Metairie. It's also why liquor stores are located on the Georgia side of the GA/AL border.

Also, I might add that having recently moved from NY to TN somehow the booze is cheaper despite the tax differential.
