With GoTG almost here I got to thinking about this fairly are genre. What similar movies or shows have you liked? Here's a couple that I think may or may not fit into this category:

Galaxy Quest - This one was funny but did have enough space elements and enough action also.

Space Balls - This one was mostly pure comedy so I'm not sure how well it fits.

Flash Gordon - Very campy. Special effects were very limited but it did have some action and for the time period I'd say it fits.

Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy - I had such high hopes for this but it was a flop. Did have some humor and had some space elements though.

Ice Pirates wins this thread. (Space Balls is in a league of its own and doesn't count).

Now that I think about it, there haven't been that many action comedies set in space.

I can buy that. Spaceballs has to be the GOAT here (it's comedy, for sure, but there is action in it as well).

Independence Day is up there for me as well...I fricking love that movie.

Armageddon is great as well. Just pure cheesy summer flick (same with ID4).

if WALL-E counts, it's up there for me as well.

And, of course, one of my favorite movies of all time: Starship Troopers. Actually, that one comes close to Spaceballs for me, and it may fit into the category of the thread better since it's almost nonstop action.

ETA: if TV counts, then Firefly needs a nod. Or we can just go with Serenity since it's the movie.

Fifth Element is a good one.

I agree that Space Balls is the GOAT, though

Starship Troopers would fit the bill as well.

Would you like to know more?

I'm going to have to disagree. Chris Tucker and Gary Oldman's dandy retarded accent made me want to punch a hole through my TV.
