Cell phone carriers restricting data speeds

How is it legal for a cell phone carrier to restrict my data speeds if I go over 5GB? I pay for an unlimited data plan, I want to be able to use unlimited data.

If it was illegal to have shitty service, a ton of airlines would be out of business right now.

Just because you're throttled doesn't mean you can't use unlimited data. Unlimited doesn't guarantee full data speeds at all times if you want that go to T-Mobile.

I argued with AT&T about this recently, not legality but just thee throttling. Supposedly they sent out notices last year that if you stay on the unlimited plan, you would be throttled. I just use wifi at home now and it helps. They are just trying to push people into the new plans and getting away from subsidized phones. It sucks but is just the way it is now.

I'm sure they have some lovely small print explaining you have unlimited data but if you go over a certain amount speeds will be throttled.

It seems like it would cost them more money to throttle your speeds then to keep you at the same speed

I'm not sure they even need that.
When you sign up for a plan, you purchase a quantity of data. You aren't getting a commitment on how fast you will get it (like home internet).
It's lousy, but nothing about it is illegal or even unethical. Your data is just as "unlimited" (if you want to call it that) as it was before.

T-Mobile is pretty clear you have full speed up to a certain amount then you will be throttled.
