What compels government soldiers in shithole nations to keep fighting?

Reading articles on the conflicts in Syria and Ukraine, and these rebels are killing/capturing their soldiers by the dozens.
Ukraine has virtually no air force remaining, and their military doesn't even always recover the bodies of its soldiers killed by rebels. There is a picture of a destroyed Ukrainian military tank with three dead soldiers still in uniform laying next to it and rebels standing guard next to them.
In Syria, these soldiers aren't even safe in their bases, and the fate of 200+ soldiers is currently unknown after rebels overran their base.
If these guys deserted there is no way these guys would be able to spend the time searching for them and going through the prosecution process. They can barely supply their remaining soldiers, much less expend more resources searching for one.
Unless there is some deep, underlying religious or patriotic reason for fighting, if I was an 18-year-old soldier in one of these countries, I'm damn sure hauling arse somewhere else and avoiding a suicide mission so some a-hole can stay in power.
Elighten me, OT.

If some country was trying to invade the US and we didn't have the military we do wouldn't you fight to protect your home and loved ones? I know I would!

Mostly for the same reasons terrorist organizations are still able to recruit. Many of their members are poor, hungry, young and impressionable, and without friends/family. It's easy to recruit people that basically have nothing and you offer them all of those things.

Probably don't have shite to live for, just trying to make some money to feed their families, or just say frick it and leave this world. Maybe just used to that kind of violence. I imagine religion plays the biggest part, rewards and such.

Without a doubt. I was thinking about this, and I cannot realistically compare the United States to any of these shitholes. These kids are essentially dying to keep some a-hole politician in power over another. It's not even so much defending their actual nation.

People that have very little actually fight HARDER to keep what they have. We are very lucky to not fully understand their thinking.

Fight or your family tastes lead.

Been that way since man first raised his hand against man.
Tribal alliances deep seeded in our psyche combined with outside factors and needs being met, as well as the effectiveness of their propaganda and indoctrination.

In some cases yes this is used, but more often than not it's the draw of camaraderie and being a part of something bigger (like a religious cause) that draws them in. It's a fascinating topic if you do your research and find some good info.

This is the OT. What should I expect if I have erroneous preconceptions and listen to the assholes around here?

I thought the Ukraine soldiers were actually pushing back the rebels and making gains.

They are, but Russia is poised to become even more involved now. Reports are that there are as many as 15,000 Russian soldiers just sitting on the border right now. Within the last few days they've begun firing artillery into Ukraine from within Russia. Even if the Ukrainian military does continue to have success, I can't see Russia just walking away and letting them win. They're going to lose some guys in the process.

We need to deplete some of these frickers, let them kill each other off, then when they are weak, take over shite.

Yea that is true with Russia. Not sure if everyone putting sanctions on them could possibly keep Russia from going in dry
