Louisiana Outdoor Expo Whitetail Mounts

The Louisiana Outdoor Expo is this weekend in Lafayette. They have a display of some of the biggest bucks taken in Louisiana over the years. Most people don't realize the caliber bucks Louisiana is able to produce. LA produced 5-6 bucks around 200" last year, and while thats not comparable to a midwest state, for a southern state that's a big deal. That black river dirt is GOOD for growing deer. Definitely worth checking out. The photo album I included is from the 2012 expo but the mounts and display are the same this year, from what I understand.

It's pretty awesome if you cross reference Louisiana's whitetail records with a state map, most of the biggest bucks in all categories come from the parishes along the MS river, and occasionally you get one from another part of the state, but its usually along the Red River or Atchafalaya River. All that river land correlates with ag/crop land,
Avoyelles, Concordia, Catahoula, Tensas, St. Landry, Madison, and Morehouse produce a large portion of the big boys.

Been before but since I live a couple blocks away I may mosey over there anyway. What are ticket prices this year?

I saw somewhere that they were like $18. That seems pretty high

Lake Ophelia is hot as well. A reputable buddy of mine put his hands on a set of 200" sheds found in there a while back.

Not surprising which parishes produce the biggest bucks. It's all derived from the richness of the soil and due to thousands of years of the Mississippi River flooding annually before the levees. It's the same reason river delta farmers drove Cadillacs and red clay and sandy farmers drive toyotas (before government subsidies).
Btw, my second cousin shot a 325# deer that was one of the too bucks ever in the state in Union Parish in 1964. Only problem was, it was a Wisconsin blue transplant to reintroduce white tails into Louisiana
He slit the throat to kill the deer and later killed a doe to have the antlers mounted on.

Thankfully, my property benefits from the river soil as well, but I'm just across the river on the MS side.
