What chance is there they punish Russia by taking the WC away in 2018?

I heard France and Germany are going to FIFA with a plan for them to co host. Can't see how they can play in Russia and pump all that money in the economy. How could Holland go there in conscience?

Could it be that once Russia bribed FIFA enough, it will stay a la Qatar?

We already had some douchenozzle Republican Senators try and interfere with the World Cup.
Embarrasing

Lets just keep politics out of the game, and have a good time. I plan on traveling to Russia in 2018.

I'm hoping this conflict will be resolved by then. But if not, it's going to be ugly.

Apparently Not

quote:

It is unprecedented, Tomlinson says, for a government minister such as [FIFA exco member and Russian sport minister Vitaly] Mutko also to sit on FIFA's executive board. It is also, in theory, a violation FIFA's own rules. Mutko ran Russia's bid for the 2018 World Cup—and he also had a vote in the body that decided it.

Tomlinson lays out a timeline: In 2008, Russia created its Ministry of Sport, with Mutko at its head. In 2009, Mutko got a seat on FIFA's executive committee. In 2010, the committee voted on the 2018 World Cup.

we'll have to see if anything else happens between now and about 2017... after that it might be too late to realistically move it

but yes it should be used as a bargaining chip against Putin for destabilizing the world

Because the hosting the Olympics in Nazi Germany was a great idea?

The World Cup hosted by Argentina ruled by a Military Junta who disappeared and murdered millions?

Brilliant

Having Brazil and South Africa host World Cups (let alone Athens hosting the 2004 Olympics) when public funds should go towards health care and education instead of White Elephant Stadiums?

Cheers to FIFA (and the IOC)!

Tens of thousands of slave laborers dying to build stadiums for Qatar's already corrupted World Cup?

Nothing to see here.

Mega-events like the World Cup and the Olympics are inherently politicized.

The only real gripe is the 1980 and 1984 Olympic boycotts by America and the Soviet Union respectively, that were born out of geopolitical posturing.

That is literally the only thing FIFA is passionate about. You can pretty much do whatever the frick you want, but if you bring governments or politics into the mix, they will flip a shite.

I disagree, the only thing FIFA is passionate about is money.

It did have its highlights.

That sucks that the Argentina govt was horrible, but FIFA is not the UN. The tournament was awarded to them before the coupe happened. I would have been ok if they took it away for security fears, but to my knowledge no visiting fans were harmed.

That sounds like the states problem. I don't see why FIFA awarding the tournament to countries that put in bids themselves is such controversial on them. It's not like FIFA told them they had to put in a bid and host. Having it in South Africa was a huge sense of pride for African soccer, and was an enjoyable event.

I'm not going to lie and say that people were not bribed, and I believe that they should change the location. But that doesn't have to do with politics, but more on corruption.

Yea, but by citizens of different countries, not by FIFA or the Olympic Committee (or they shouldn't be). FIFA should not be influenced by patriotism, bribery, or guided by politics when selecting a country. I don't agree with putting it in an area of unrest or unstable government, but more for the safety of fans than anything else.

The United Nations are responsible for the security of the people from all over the world.

FIFA is only responsible for the fans attending their event.
