So we're on vacation with my family (16 of us, my brothers, all their kids, and parents). We're sitting around playing domino's and drinking, and I get control of the Airplay.

I try to play the most accessible shite I listen to: Be Good Tanyas, Avett Brothers, Head and the Heart, etc... etc.. Nothing but complaints about the weird music I'm playing.

It's not like I'm hitting them with The Knife. Black Moth Super Rainbow, Ween, and Swans. This shite is accessible.

Sometimes I find myself really disappointed in the musical "openness" of people, especially family.

Anyone else have similarly frustrating experiences trying to find acceptable playlists for family? From now on, I think I'll just hit the 80s station on Spotify and let it jam.

never heard of that weird stuff, just play Drake. Everyone likes him, he's won Grammy's and he's got a style for everyone.

Hey bro,

Not hatin' or anythin' but did you see where Drizzy ranked on the best vocabulary in hip hop study? Hurtin' bra.

Brother can still pull some leg though, so I ain't mad.

People like what they know
They don't know what they like.

Put on some classic rock and everything should be good.

In the situation you just described, people just want something they know as background music. Like another poster suggested, just hit up classic rock radio on spotify and enjoy the time with your family.

Maybe that's what they want to hear.

You can never go wrong with 70's rock and funk. Some 60's will work

And don't say 337 or bobbyray. I want to know who the puppetmaster is.

My 8th grade niece is starting to get into roots rock/indie-folk type of music (and she sings and plays guitar), so I was trying to introduce her to some stuff she might like. We'd also just returned from a concert to see a band called Humming House, and everyone was raving about how much they liked the band and enjoyed the concert. So I was also trying to play similar stuff to that. Probably not the time or place for it. Next time I'll just hit the decades stations on Spotify.

Someone who used to be pretty good but now it seems like they aren't even trying.

If he's not an alter I feel pretty sad for the Latino delegation

Other than my sister, who is insufferable, I turn my family on to music all the time. I hand pick by artist that they're bound to like, then give them more once they dig it.

I just turn music off in these scenarios. With my wife's side of the family, its all doo-wup they want to listen to. You ever listen to doo-wop for hours? ITS LAME.

With my father and step mother, its cher. fricking CHER! My step mother can listen to cher for 4 or 5 hours.

With my mother its billy joel, and not 70s cool billy joel but the recent shite. And its like 4 songs she will put on repeat. Sometimes she will mix it up with kenny g.

since I am the only one astute enough to bring speakers to family vacation things, I just leave it at home so I don't have to listen to their crap.

When I make a playlist for a party or bunch of people, I usually stick to stuff that most people are familiar with and sprinkle in some lesser known stuff that I like. It seems to get a much better reception then playing a full Neutral Milk Hotel album.

The setting helps a lot. For example, at the beach it is easy to breakout my much-hyped reggae collection.
