I don't Beta operating systems unless I have a completely different partition set up and I have no interest in taking the time to set it up that way.

I ran every iOS 7 beta on my 4S and it was fine.

I may hold off after looking into it more:

Apple also warns that some new features may not be available, including phone calls, SMS, Handoff, Instant Hotspot, and iCloud drive. Spotlight suggestions are currently U.S.-only, and some applications and services may not yet be compatible with Yosemite.

Probably will wait and see because if the coolest new stuff isn't included, probably not worth the trouble and the risk. My secondary machine is an older iMac so that's not an option.

I have it ready to install. Just need to get home and hook up an external hard drive.

I'm downloading it. Gonna install it on a partition to be on the safe side.

FYI, I never got an email. I just went back to the link and when I logged in it had me authorized.

I ended up just installing it on an extra sd card I had laying around. I really like the flatter look. I'm going to put iOS 8 on my old 4s to try out Handoff and Continuity.

Is there a way to back up my computer without a time capsule? What's the best way to do this?

I'm typing this on Yosemite. Just gotten it going and haven't had time to mess with it but first impression is I really like the new look.

Just plug up a hard drive and use Time Machine. I keep my Air plugged up to a spare hard drive during the day so the hourly Time Machine backups can run.

The one thing that surprises me is the bird icon still there for mail. I thought it would be a goner. Sticks out like a sore thumb in the new look.
