Okay so imagine a professional athlete retires after a successful career in say basketball at the age of 37, without ever having attended college. Could that athlete go to his favorite college team and join their football program? You see ex minor league guys come back all the time, isn't this the same thing?

So like hypothetically could Dwight Howard retire from Basketball and go play football at UGA or whatever school he is a fan of being from Atlanta? Or would their endorsements from companies make them ineligible?

Yes, LSU won a national championship with a QB who had done that, Matt Mauck.

The entire amateur/pro distinction is an archaic leftover from the 19th century, when gentlemen played for love of the game and would never stoop to taking money

It will soon disappear when college athletes are paid. Eventually the colleges will be true minor leagues with unlimited eligibility

Right, like I said in the OP you see guys do it after flopping in the minor leagues all the time. My question is if there would be anything stopping someone that is say a 20 year NBA veteran to come back as a 38 year old and play football in college?

I'm surprised colleges don't recruit more pitchers who burn out.

There is no age limit, but once the individual steps foot on to campus his 5 year clock starts running.

Yea I'm reffering to guys who went straight out of high school.

If they have sponsors from their pro career would that make them immediately ineligible for college?

I would think the whole having an agent and accepting money thing would forfeit their amateur status, thus make them inelligible. I don't know though.

I don't think so, but he couldn't currently be receiving money. The reason I say this, 15 years or so back Colorado had a wr who was big time skier, which requires sponors to compete. He was told that he had to suspend the sponorships even thought it had nothing to do with his football. The rules could have been change either way since then.

so you are pretty much limited to baseball players. NFL and NBA require college (except some cases I think)..... so the clock would expire on them. It is an aggregate clock, not per sport

Yea well there are a ton of NBA veterans who never went to college that are probably good enough to play college football

Would be epic. He should do it this fall. Hell, he wouldnt miss that much of the NBA season. He would also become an absolute icon in OHIO sports history

What about the whole agent rule? I thought you couldn't play collegiate sports once you got an agent. If so, wouldn't that rule be applicable forever? I'm assuming I am wrong on something here.

Obviously it must only pertain to that sport. Because I know Josh Booty had an agent for baseball before he came here
