What's the difference between a Porter & a Stout?

so i've ready two articles about it, and they are somewhat contradicting (old definition vs new definition)…can some of you mavens please shed some light on this topic?

I would say Porters have less roasted malt taste than stouts and hence drink a bit lighter. But they are kissing cousins.

This probably is wrong, but I've always considered a porter a "lighter" or "pale" stout... I think it actually has something to with roasting barely though
